Houston Rockets Summer Shook the NBA
Earthquakes create one of the most powerful forces known to men. What men builds in years or months, an earthquake can destroy in just a matter of hours. Throughout the existence of man, these forces have caused devastating catastrophes that are no easy matter. However, I can't help but find myself using these powerful natural occurrences to describe what the Houston Rockets have done to the NBA this summer.
Just as earthquake can change the face of the earth, the Houston Rockets has just changed the NBA landscape this offseason.
The team was one of the few surprises the previous season as they won games and reached the playoffs. They play an exciting brand of basketball that is entertaining to watch even for those who are not that into basketball. They played with a fast pace, always racing down the court to beat the opponents. Then there's James Harden who was able to showcase just how good he is after playing off the bench for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The team was good and everybody expected them to get better for next season as their key players get to learn to play with each other for one more year. However, I think I'm correct to say that they went over the expectations. In fact, it would be an understatement to say so.
The signing of Dwight Howard
You can say anything about how Howard demanded to get Kobe amnestied or muzzled, or how he demanded D'Antoni to be replaced. But you've got to agree with me on this when I say that he is a damn great player. He is not a perfect player, but he is one of the best in the league right now for his position.
Although Jeremy Lin is virtually a work in progress and Harden still having a room for improvement, they are pretty good as they are right now. Adding the best center in league can only make the team better. Opposing teams will have to solve a puzzle of trying to contain Howard and Harden at the same time while keeping a lookout for other players who can hurt them.
What's even more impressive or scary, depending on what team you're fan of, is the fact that everything doesn't end here.
The benefits of flexibility
The team has plenty of flexibility to help them make improvements as the season progresses. The team have some good pieces they can move if they need to. This thanks in part to the savvy maneuvering of the Rockets front office that allowed to stock up talents without crippling their salary situation.
