Image There’s never a dull moment for betting for sports when it comes to NBA. Even the offseason is filled with many interesting events as teams try to gear up for the next season. There’s the draft wherein teams can select players to build around or to strengthen the team. Then there’s the free agency period wherein teams try to sign or acquire the best available players. If you bet on sports, you have to be kept updated with the latest signings that will affect what’s going to unfold for the next season.

Thoughts on Jose Calderon

If there’s one way to describe the newly-signed Spanish point guard, it’s that he plays safe.  And this is exactly what the Mavs are doing right now. Jose Calderon is a true point guard in every sense. Despite having played for awful teams these past few seasons, he was always consistent in having to efficiently control the offense of a team when he is on the helm.

He has a very high assist-turnover ratio and good shooting stroke as proven by his career 40% three-point shooting and around 46% for long 2s.  His low turnover is a testament to his ball handling and smart decision-making with his passes.

The next season will the tenth for the 32-year old veteran. His $29 million 4-year contract means he will be playing until 36 which concerns more than a few fans. There’s a question of why spend that high of an amount for a player that’s looking to be in his last run.

A lesson from last year

Well, there are plenty of upsides to this contract. If you’re a fan of the Mavs, last season was undoubtedly a painful experience. The team missed the playoffs for the first time since the year 2000. As shown by last season, the team is lacking in different aspects. There’s the lackluster defense and the every inefficient offense.

Having a good defense can lead to an easy offense. However, it’s also true that a good offense makes playing defense easier. Last year, opposing teams scored lots of points on the Mavs in transition coming from turnovers and bad shot attempts.

The team didn’t have someone that was able to control the pace the game and follow the play they were meant to do. Despite having some young and speedy point guards like Darren Collison and Rodrigue Beaubois, the lack of experience to make the right decision took its toll.

Having Calderon on the team means that Carlisle won’t be losing plenty of hair strands as the veteran point guard can certainly control the tempo and execute plays that’ll give them the shot that they want. His ability to hit shots is also invaluable in creating space for the team’s best offensive weapons.
