Your Guide to Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET)
TANCET is conducted every year, by Anna University, a technical university located in Guindy, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. TANCET is the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test for admission to Anna University, Government & Government Aided Colleges, and Self-financing Colleges, in Tamil Nadu. On the basis of the TANCET score, a candidate can get admission to a number of colleges in Tamil Nadu.

TANCET – Courses Offered
You can take the entrance exam for admission to-
- Master of Business Administration (M.B.A)
- Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A)
- Master of Engineering (M.E.) / Master of Technology (M. Tech.) / Master of Architecture (M. Arch.) / Master of Planning (M. Plan.)
TANCET – Eligibility
To be eligible for the exam, a candidate should have pursued a Bachelor’s degree, of minimum 3 years duration, and secured at least 50% marks (45 % in the case of candidates belonging to reserved categories) in the exam.
Candidates in the final semester or year, of the examination of the qualifying degree course, except for courses offered by Professional Institution’s (like AMIE), are also eligible to apply for TANCET.
TANCET – Exam pattern
The TANCET exam is an offline exam, i.e. pen and paper based exam. There are 15 test centers for the exam, spread across the Tamil Nadu state. The duration of the entrance exam is 2 hours, and the exam features 100 questions, split across 5 sections. The entrance exam, for admission to MBA and MCA courses, will be conducted on the same date, but in different time slots. While the entrance exam for ME/M. Tech/M. Arch/M. Plan will be held on different dates.
Candidates, who have qualified the GATE, or the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, are exempt from appearing for TANCET. But these candidates should have a valid GATE score, above the GATE cutoff for TANCET.
TANCET – Marking Pattern
For every correct answer, 1 mark will be awarded to the candidates. And for every incorrect response, 1/3 mark will be deducted.
Tips for exam day-
- Carry your admit card and other documents
- As the paper is in offline mode, don’t forget to carry the required stationary
- Reach the examination center in time
- Read the instructions properly, before starting the question paper
- Read the question properly before attempting
- Manage your time well
The results of TANCET 2017 will be declared in the month of April 2017, on the official portal of Anna University. Candidates will get admission to the different colleges in Tamil Nadu, based upon their score in the common entrance test. The counseling date and other information about admission can be accessed from the website of the conducting authority, i.e. Anna University.
