Today, more than 2000 jobs are available for a fresh graduate in engineering, in major PSUs in India. The list includes companies like IOCL BHEL, NTPC, BPCL, CEL, Power Grid, and the likes. Most of these undertakings look at the graduate’s GATE score, apart from interview results, to narrow down the candidates for employment.

Qualifying the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) has become a necessity for all Engineers who aspire to be a part of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in the country. It is now a basic requirement for all engineers to secure a good government job. Besides the GATE score, a number of PSUs consider group discussions and personal interviews for recruitment.

What and why of PSUs:

A Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) is a Government owned corporation which has more than 51% shares owned by the Central or a State Government. These Government companies often function like any private company, but share a percentage of their profits with the Government, which gets them government support in return.

A career with a PSU requires strong and detailed technical knowledge of core engineering principles. Most of these PSUs undertake recruitment through GATE 2017, which is a national level entrance exam that tests ones’ technical skills and general engineering aptitude.

The recruitment:

Most of the PSUs that recruit through GATE 2017 employ Engineering Trainees (ET) based on their GATE scores, offering them a change for permanent recruitment, depending on the candidate’s performance during the training period. Initially, the companies would shortlist candidates based on the GATE scores and then finalize candidates through a GD and Interview.

The application process for PSU Recruitment through GATE 2017 involves the following steps:

  • 1.  Candidates who have applied for GATE 2017 can register for various PSU recruitments, through their official websites.
  • 2.  Every hiring PSU announces application dates and deadlines, until which students can apply.
  • 3.    While registering for a PSU, candidates have to enter their GATE Admit Card details.
  • 4.  The candidates also have to provide their educational qualifications and complete the form.
  • 5.   Completed forms can then be downloaded and printed out to be sent to the designated PSU offices.

The reason why some of the country’s best PSUs accept GATE Score is because this exam not only tests the technical skills of the candidates, but also their analytical & logical skills, making them capable enough to work in the industry. Students who have successfully applied and given the GATE test should stay updated with the date announcements, so that they do not miss out on the applications to their favorite companies.
