Engineering courses continue to be one of the most popular choices in India, and that is probably the reason why the number of engineering colleges has grown exponentially in the country. Today, our country has some of the finest government and private engineering colleges and universities. These top engineering colleges in India impart courses at both under-graduate and post-graduate levels. Besides the metropolitans, some of the top engineering colleges of India are to be found in cities like Roorkee, Guwahati, Vellore, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Allahabad, among many others.

Now that there is such a huge increase in the number of these colleges in the country, students must have clear information about the best ones and their pros and cons along with the admission procedure, which would help them in making wiser choices, while moving in the right direction. Majority of the top engineering colleges of India follow a specific selection procedure. Different colleges conduct their own entrance examinations, letting students select from a good variety of engineering disciplines, including Civil, Computer, Mechanical, Electronics, Biochemical, Chemical, and Electrical.

While the IITs continue to rule the top engineering colleges list, there are many other colleges on the list as well. IIT provides the country with world-class technology professionals every year and therefore, the seven IITs are considered to have the best standards for technical education in India. IIT takes admissions to its undergraduate programs based on the results of the Joint Entrance Examination or JEE. Apart from IITs, there are important colleges like the BITS, Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences) and the Banaras Hindu University, with the latter one being one of the oldest universities imparting technical knowledge in different disciplines in India.
