by Rajat Singh writer
Aluminum is an element that has an atomic number of 13. Its symbol is Al and it belongs to a group of metal which includes the tin and the lead. The ancient Egyptians used aluminum oxides for pottery and glazes. The Romans also made use of this metal. During the early years, aluminum was thought of as hard and difficult to extract which made it a highly sought-after metal. Later the method of smelting was discovered. Subsequent discoveries proved that the metal is very common and in its pure state is light too.

Aluminum finds usage in a variety of applications and this is because of the many wonderful properties that the metal exhibits. Aluminum can be recycled and is durable too. The applications of aluminum are diverse and varied. Today aluminum finds usage in the transportation, commerce and aviation industries. Some of the applications of aluminum are well known while others are not that obvious. Besides consumer production, aluminum is also used in creation of glass.

Application of aluminum:

Use in Households

This element is used for making window frame, door knobs and kitchen utensils. This element is applied in the manufacture of saucepans, kettles, toasters & refrigerators. It is also used in making outdoor and indoor furniture. It is also used in making tennis balls, golf clubs etc.

In Construction

Aluminum is one of the necessary metals used in construction. The metal is made use of in practically all elements of construction like skylights, shutters, building bridges, ladders& railings. This element is present in doors, rods, wiring, stampings, bars, sheets, tubing, pipes, casting & scraps. Staircases are made of aluminum too, many a times. This metallic element is used in a lot of buildings since it is easy to maintain. The light weight metal is also used in gutters.

A layer of aluminum cladding is as good as bricks or stones. Aluminum can be joined and painted with other materials as well. This could be used to give a new look to the edifices. Builders and carpenters prefer aluminum since it is highly versatile. It can be welded, cut, bond, tapered and curved in a lot of shapes. Aluminum is used in a wide range of industrial applications, mostly in the form of quality aluminum wires.

Package

Foils, bottles caps, trays and cans are usually made of aluminum. It is also used in the manufacture of thermos, storage boxes and utensil lids. Foil containers, foil wrappings and bottle tops are made from aluminum. Aluminum is mostly preferred because it helps keep food clean.

Power Lines

The fact that aluminum is light in weight makes it ideal for use in electricity and power lines. Quality aluminum wires are preferred for power lines since aluminum has a low density. These quality aluminum wires are preferred over copper wires because if copper wires are used companies would have to create very costly support structures.

Thus, aluminum in all its forms is made use of in a variety of applications.
