GATE is an online examination of three hours duration, featuring multiple choice questions. Every year, the level of competition keeps increasing, and therefore, besides hard work and study, a GATE aspirant needs to have a strategy planned out to perform well in the exam.

The GATE score is used for admission to post-graduate programs, such as M.E., M. Tech, Ph.D., etc., in IIT, IISC, and other institutions that accept the score. The GATE score is also used by public and private sector companies for screening candidates for employment. Here are the common exam day mistakes that you should avoid to do well in the exam -

1. Discrepancy in the GATE admit card
When you receive your GATE admit card, screen it thoroughly for any discrepancy. If there’s a discrepancy, report it to the concerned authority immediately.

2. Reaching the wrong exam center
Check the center mentioned in your GATE admit card properly, and if possible, visit the center beforehand. Doing so can save you from a last minute rush and from the chances of reaching the wrong exam center.

3. Not having GATE Admit Card
In the rush to reach the exam center, or due to nervousness, some candidates reach the exam center without the GATE Admit Card. Without your GATE Admit Card, you won’t be allowed to sit for the exam. Thus, ensure that you carry it when you start for the exam center.

4. Not understanding the online mode of examination
GATE is an online exam; therefore, it is important for you to get familiar with the online mode of examination.

5. Not reading the instructions properly
Every examination has a set of instructions or guidelines to follow. In order to save time for answering questions, candidates often overlook the instructions, which can later cause problems.

6. Not reading the questions properly
Many candidates are in so much rush to attempt as many questions as they can, they sometimes do not read the questions properly and end up selecting the wrong answer.

7. Poor time management
Time management is essential for every exam. If you do not distribute the time according to the sections of the exam, you’ll not be able to clear the sectional cut-offs in the exam.

Avoid these silly mistakes to perform well when you sit for your GATE exam. Being a postgraduate level competitive exam, GATE requires hard work, dedication, and a proper study plan, so ensure that all that is factored in in your studying strategy.
