Pimping My Honor

Seeing the title of this article one might mistakenly think I am referring to something quite different to what I am about to portray.

No I am not talking about the world’s oldest profession; however what i am going to reveal is just as bad.

My basis for this article came about several days ago when at 5am in the morning my phone rang and a well spoken and excited American woman informed my sleep deprived and sluggish self that her company wished to honour me in their prestigious and popular Who's Who Magazine and she would like to conduct a brief but necessary preliminary interview which was anything but brief taking over an hour and a half of my valuable time.

My interviewer although very pleasant to talk to did make me feel slightly uncomfortable mainly because I am not one to blow my own horn as the saying goes, I have always been slightly reclusive and prefer to understate my achievements rather than overstate and risk crossing the line into total fabrication of the truth.

I was asked about the many aspects of my business and experience as well as some in-depth questions about my personal philosophies, all of which I answered modestly and truthfully even if they were slightly embarrassing.

So how does this all fit my title "Pimping My Honour' well as my interview drew to a close the real purpose of the phone call was made clear, see in order to receive my honour i needed to subscribe to their site and magazine in one of the offered plans, in return i would receive not only my name and a brief article honouring me but also a nicely presented plaque for my office wall and the right to submit my written articles into their publication.

This to me was simply a marketing ploy to entice me into paying their ridiculous and exorbitant fees, there was no real honour as i was paying for the bragging rights to say i was in this Who's Who and I’m a published author for their magazine.

See to me if you’re going to honour someone why should they pay you to do so how does your appraisal of their achievements convert into a reason to exhort money from them in order for them to receive their honour and gifts.

The mere fact that they approached me put me through an intense interview process all the while congratulating me and lauding my achievements the having the audacity to ask me to pay in order to accept their honour left me feeling somewhat like i had stepped off a bus in a strange town and immediately asked to prostitute myself but instead of being paid for my services i would have to pay my clients.

These companies and magazines need to learn what the real meaning of honouring a person is would they charge the returning soldier who has proven his bravery in battle to be given his well deserved medals ?.

So the next time your phone rings and the person on the other end states they want to honour you your first question to them should be how much is this going to cost me?
