Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) is a company that was formed to develop Aerotropolis projects in India. It was primarily formed to develop India’s first Aerotropolis in the state of West Bengal. The company has plans to develop similar projects in other parts of India as well. BAPL has taken initiative to launch the second Aerotropolis in the city of Ludhiana in Punjab.

Aerotropolis may be defined as a city that has its infrastructures, land, and economy working towards generating revenue from its airport. The airport works as a monetization model for the city’s growth. BAPL started its operations to convert this old small town into a new emerging aero-city. The project was completed in about 9 years with a modern transformation of Durgapur. As a part of this project, the city got hold of a huge residential complex, which was named as Sujalaam – the sky city. It has many high rise towers that are spread over an area of about 1818 acres of land. The skycity withholds a good number of amenities within its premises, so as to make it a better place for living. Within a short radius, it has schools, colleges, education institutes, hospitals, entertainment centres, Information Technology park, business and shopping centres, hospitals and day care units.

As a second part of this project BAPL developed an airport at Andal that is located next to this city. Andal had an old airport that was used by the US Military Soldiers during the Second World War. It was an abandoned airport since long time. BAPL used this airport’s resources and converted it into a modern airport. This airport got its commercial operations up and running in the year 2015, when India got its first Aerotropolis announced officially. Soon after its inaugural, major airlines queued up to schedule flights between Durgapur and other destinations. The airlines that appeared were Go Air and Air India which started flying between Durgapur – Kolkata- New Delhi initially. The airport thus developed was named as Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport. It was named after a famous poet of Bengal.

This newly developed airport and the sky city together constituted the so called Aerotropolis that attracted other businesses in the region. The town soon became a growing industrial city and attracted more investments. Mr Partha Ghosh got all that he dreamed for and his company BAPL reached new heights. The popularity and grand success of Mr Partha Ghosh gave West Bengal its first private Greenfield airport that is also called as the Andal airport.
