The KNI Airport in Durgapur is now fully operational and it is operating flights from Durgapur to New Delhi, which was previously limited up till Kolkata only. This initiative was taken to meet the demand of the passengers, who were finding it very difficult to land at the Kolkata airport and again board a second connecting flight to reach New Delhi. It was Air India’s 42 seat aircraft, between Durgapur and Kolkata, which flew with about full occupancy, after it was extended to New Delhi.

Durgapur holds many public sector undertakings and many power industries that were benefited with the launch of this re-scheduled flight plans. The class of people, who were benefited the most, were the executives of these companies, who has started taking the 45 minutes flights from Kolkata. It were the government officials only who used to take the Kolkata – Durgapur flights earlier, but now after joining New Delhi as its newer destination, the other (non – government) officials also has begun to travel as a frequent flyer. The KNI airport (Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport) at Durgapur has gained its much popularity since then. Mr Partha Ghosh who is the Managing Director of BAPL, said the demand for flights from Durgapur to New Delhi is seeing a growth of 20% every month, and if this remains constant, the day is not far enough when they will need to add more aircrafts to the project. He adds - it is just the beginning and the company is going to see more of the developments in coming times.

Mr. Partha Ghosh came up with an idea to develop this Andal airport. In the process he comments - they are in the process of having a tie-up with other airlines as well that is going to serve the gap between the demand and supply curve of this emerging market. He is the one among the three individual promoters who has had a tie-up with a Singapore based company named – Changi Airport International, who gave its expertise to the development of India’s first Aerotropolis. The flight as operating in this region runs thrice a week. More passengers to this catchment area are expected from Andal, Burdwan, Asansol and Raniganj.
