Durgapur, an industrial belt and the so called Steel City, now no more remains confined to a small town, but it has now developed into a smart city that has its very own infrastructures, socio-economic growth factors and a solid plan towards success as an Aerotropolis.

The term ‘Aerotropolis’ conceptualizes as a sub-region of a metropolis city where the infrastructure, economy and layout of that place are partially based on an Airport. It is a city that serves as a multi-modal airport city. There is a basic difference between an Airport city and a city airport. A traditional city airport is one which serves as a medium for transit of passengers and goods. But, an Airport city is one that has an Airport as its base for its societal and economic growth. Which means the overall growth of such a place is fully dependant on the success of that Airport based on which an adjacent city is constructed.

Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) - a company formed to construct Aerotropolis in India - has projected a great move into the construction sector by developing an old abandoned airport near the Durgapur city, into a newly built airport and named it as Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (KNI Airport). It is expected that the major units in these sectors will be having many workers, who will bring up revenues to the airport’s economic developments.

BAPL is offering concessions on air fares, landing and parking fees, in order to generate the airport’s revenues and to attract more and more passengers in coming times. Now as the airport’s operations are functional, these plans are working as expected and the airport has started generating revenues. In addition to this, the West Bengal Govt. has lifted off the sales tax on aviation for this sector.

Mr. Partha Ghosh, in the second phase of Aerotropolis project, helped build a sky city that was named as Sujalaam skycity. The Aerotropolis is constructed over an area of over 2300 acres of land. The airport terminal is built on over 650 acres, which has an industrial park and an Info-Tech hub on 550 acres. Additionally, it also has a medical unit there and a housing project on another 650 acres.

Lastly, it also holds schools and shopping areas and some other entertainment frameworks on another 450 acres. Partha Ghosh of Bengal Aerotropolis mentions that - the project is backed by a worldwide associate from Singapore named Changi Airports International, which has actually provided technical assistance and also some investments to the project.
