Tips for Insertion & Removal of Valves in Medical Oxygen Cylinders
Experts recommend observing certain precautionary measures for inserting and removal of medical valves containing oxygen as it is highly combustible. Therefore, while performing any operations in an oxygen-enriched environment, it is very important to look through these steps that could assist you in working safely with the medical oxygen gas tank valves.
Valve removal
• Check if the area is well-ventilated and oil-free
• Stay away from sources of ignition like open flames, lit cigarettes, etc.
• Open the valve slightly after verifying that it is an oxygen cylinder having the Oxygen USP warning label. Also ensure that the cylinder is free of oxygen charge(pressure)
• Secure the cylinder using a wrench that fits the valve body and break the valve free from the cylinder
• Observe if you hear any hissing sound. If you do, be alert! It may be loss of contents which could prove dangerous.
• Never use oil-based release agent to assist in removal of the valve
• Evaluate the threads before re-inserting the valve into the cylinder
• Do not reuse the Teflon O-ring
Valve Insertion
• Perform the valve insertion operation in clean area with oil-free tools
• Ensure that the cylinder has an Oxygen USP warning label on the sidewall
• Inspect the inlet and outlet connections of the valves, threads and O-ring gland for any damage to the threads and the O-ring area.
• Change the Teflon O-ring every time the valve is re-installed
• Tighten the valve hand-tight
• Close the valve with less than 1 ft torque
