Industrial Gas Cylinder Safety Guidelines
Industrial gas includes a large number of products that comprise of elements, compound (molecular) or mixtures that are in gaseous form at defined temperatures and pressure, though they may be stored as liquids or solids. The gaseous state of matter does not have any prescribed shape or volume. The properties of gas vary according to the pressure and temperature to which they are subjected.
Oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide are the most common industrial gases, while argon, xenon, krypton and neon are called the noble gases. Many industries store the gases in the liquefied form for ease of transport and storage as well. The gases are liquefied when high pressure is applied.
A wide variety of containers are used to store and transport the industrial gas. Industrial gas cylinders are application specific containers that are manufactured by cylinder tank manufacturers. Gases in the compressed form are used in laboratories, schools and many industries. The gas in the industrial cylinder is at very high pressure. The gas has to be handled carefully and the industrial cylinder tank or the industrial gas cylinder has to be as per the gas for which it is being used.
Gas cylinder safety guidelines:
- Know your gas to reduce hazards associated with gas handling
- Identification label with dangerous goods classification
- Refrigeration and industrial gas cylinder color identification
Construction and design of industrial gas cylinders
The industrial gas tanks and industrial gas cylinders must be constructed in accordance with the applicable standards that define the material to be used, the method of manufacture, test for pressure, maximum permissible filled pressure and periodic inspection method.
Size of gas cylinders
Single cylinder-A wide range of single high pressure cylinders are available depending on the volume and pressure that is required. The cylinder size is denoted by a letter code. The contents in the cylinder are measured in cubic meter or kg at a standard pressure and temperature.
Manifold cylinder pack- these cylinders are interconnected and normally used where large quantity of gas is required.
Hazard of industrial gas tanks/cylinders
Compressed gas is highly hazardous if not handle properly
- The cylinder may rupture as the gas is at high pressure
- Heating may cause the safety device to malfunction and release the contents
- When liquefied gas is released, it vaporizes to create large amount of gas
- Gases are flammable. A small leak can result in an explosion
- Inert gas leakage causes asphyxiation
- Corrosive and toxic gases are hazardous to health
