The furniture upholstery is the weakest spot in any home. We constantly make it dirty and still we need to maintain it clean because we sit and rest there every day. Every day we need to take care for traces of juice, beer, coffee, chocolate, wine, chewing gum and others that leave dirty stains behind. We have prepared for you some great tips to help you keep your home clean and your furniture comfortable.

How to Clean Furniture Upholstery

  • Avoid washing the dirty furniture upholstery in the washing machine. It is not recommended also to dry it with a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner.

  • The cleaning experts also advice not vacuum the upholstery too often, because when sucking the dirt particles, the vacuum also sucks small pieces of the fabric. Therefore, over time the fabric will begin to lose its capacity.

  • When using detergents to clean the stains, avoid applying them directly to the fabric. You may use a piece of cloth to apply the detergent on. It is not recommendable also to use different cleaners on a stain as the different ingredients may damage the upholstery.

  • When you finish with the cleaning process, rinse well the detergent and let the upholstery dry by itself.

  • Different stains require different cleaning methods. Coffee, for example, is cleaned with soap. Wipe the area with damp cloth and allow it to dry.

  • Juice stains require more efforts. To deal with them stir in a mixture of ammonia and vinegar. Apply the solution to the stained area, rinse and let it dry.

  • Most people think that red wine stains are cleaned very difficult. This is not true. Just sprinkle the area with salt and let it soak. When the fabric dries, the salt can be cleaned with a vacuum.

  • Stains of beer should be treated with soap. Prepare a solution of 1 tablespoon of vinegar and half a litre of water. Apply it to the stain, wait a few minutes, and then rinse with pure water and leave the area to air dry.

  • It is a bit harder to remove gum stains from upholstery. One of the simplest ways is to put a pack ice and when the gum hardens, scrape it with a blunt object. Then the fabric can be treated with methyl alcohol.

  • Blood is cleaned before drying. Wash fresh blood stains with cold water and the dry blood stains should be cleaned by professional cleaners.
