The Reasons why Aerotropolis Is in Increasing Demand
Aerotropolis may be termed as an airport city that is structured with a definitive plan. It is a city that has its socio-economic growth dependent on some factors. These factors are generally revenue generating and contribute towards the further development and growth of the airport city. In recent times, airports have become multifunctional and multi model role enterprises that can generate commercial developments within their boundaries. In general Aerotropolis offer a great number of commercial facilities, which may include the following:
- Restaurants, catering and other food services, some locally-themed International brand and specialty retail shops
- Banks and currency exchange facility
- Duty free shops
- Airline lounges
- Private meeting rooms
- Hotels and accommodation
- Office buildings

Mr. Partha Ghosh the Managing Director of Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited, laid the foundation for India’s very first Aerotropolis in the year 2006. He was the first person in India to dream of an Aerotropolis city concept and within a short period of time, he took initiatives to turn it out into reality.
He formed an Aerotropolis in the state of West Bengal and named it as Bengal Aerotropolis. It was the city of Durgapur, West Bengal, which he had chosen to be the India’s first Aerotropolis city. The company has worked in accordance with Changi Airports International, which is one of the largest airport management companies in the world. They had embedded most of the facilities (from the list above) and incorporated them into this Aerotropolis project. They developed the so called KNI (Kazi Nazrul Islam) airport. The Airport occupies an area of 5750 square meters. It is able to handle Boeing 737 and narrow body aircrafts like Airbus A320. The airport can handle about one million passengers in a year. Apart from these facilities Mr. Partha Ghosh also formed a residential township, and named it as Sujalaam skycity.
