The Contributions of BAPL in Improving India
Aerotropolis has become the buzzword in the current times when it comes to developments in aviation industry. The ways aviation industry worked before have been overtaken by this new concept, that make lives of people become easier. As aviation-linked businesses come forward connecting transportation, a more expansive Aerotropolis (airport-integrated urban economic region) takes shape. The evolution of these new urban forms; first begins with the commercially diversifying terminal and then moves progressively outward to the airport city and then finally to the greater Aerotropolis.
A study of world Aerotropolis and its comparison with India’s first Aerotropolis (developed in the state of West Bengal) can show up where we are at present, when we talk about latest developments in the aviation sector.
The Grand Hyatt at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport serves as a virtual corporate headquarters. The evolving enterprises at the largest international airports passenger terminals are morphing into glossy shopping centres and recreational points, as well as locations to exchange knowledge and conduct business. No longer restricted to souvenir shops, food parlors and duty-free outlets, they now have galleries and shopping lanes with branded boutiques, and retail outlets.
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), which opened in 1998, is a good case in point. Its main terminal hosts a galleria with more than 20 high end designer clothing shops. The airport also developed a gold exchange program. In early 2010 HKIA premiered the world’s largest terminal commercial lounge. This 1,394sqm full-service business centre supports up to 300 users with wireless hotspots, workstations, printers and meeting facilities along with large-screen TVs. When not working, business travelers can enjoy an all-day buffet and an á la carte menu along with personal amenities such as spa-type massages, barber services and manicures.
Similarly, Singapore’s Changi Airport opened in 1981 and more recently introduced cinemas, fitness centres, and a tropical butterfly park. These not only help to reduce travelers’ stress but also improve their ‘airport experience’, which can be a determining factor for transfer passengers choosing an airline and its hub.
When comparing all of these with India’s first Greenfield airport under the project launched by Mr. Partha Ghosh of Bengal Aerotropolis Project Limited (BAPL), it can be seen that India is in no way back than the most of these above Aerotropolis cities, as they have all the amenities that the others around the world provide. The company’s M.D. Mr. Partha Ghosh also did develop a Skycity named Sujalaam skycity that revolves around this Aerotropolis concept.
Author Bio: Mr. Partha Ghosh holds a key position in the development of the project of Bengal Aerotropolis projects Limited (BAPL). Mr. Partha Ghosh takes pride in the development of Sujalaam skycity that holds its position as the first among the entire residential township in the region.
