Save the Arctic Life to Preserve the Eco-balance of Nature

by Last lastchristmas Book lastchristmasbook
Ian Irvine’s The Last Christmas throws light on one of the serious environmental crises, Global Warming, that gradually takes the world to its doom. As the story unfolds its events we find two reindeers of Santa Claus, Vixen and Dasher, are playing around. But, a sudden disaster strikes the serene atmosphere there and ice sheets start crumbling down. Dasher almost meets his death, but luckily escapes. After coming out of the death trap devised by the disaster, Dasher accompanied by Vixen start to note other's’ reaction to the shocking event, and find a total silence prevailing everywhere.

It is a desolate spectacle all around. The elves at the toy workshop are all sitting idly, as if they cannot totally understand what is going on. Life there has come to a pause. Then a glimpse of activity is noticed - Santa Claus along with his wife Matilda, elf leader Telver, reindeers Comet and Rafe initiates a meeting to investigate on the cause of the disaster further. The meeting is taking place at Santa’s office right above the workshop. To have a glance of the meeting Dasher and Vixen climb up to the rooftop of Santa’s office and start peeping in the room through the skylight.

As the things move on, Dasher becomes too impatient to get a better view of the meeting, and as a result he strides onto the skylight. Suddenly, the skylight breaks apart to allow Dasher land in the room through the passage opened up. This stupid act of Dasher though imparts a temporary shock on everyone in the room, they immediately moves on with their contemplation on the crisis. Comet comes up with an analogical survey that shows a fragment of ice is left there at the North Pole compared to what the size of ice was there in 70s.

Another touching picture shows a polar bear floating on a slice of ice with her two cubs. This is symbolic of the future at the North Pole. The speed with which Global Warming is making all the ice at the North Pole vanish, very soon there will be hardly any ice. The sole victims will be the innocent Arctic birds and animals who will suffer for the acts that they are not responsible for. The message through the story is quite clear. If we at all want to save the Arctic life and eco-balance in the region, we must get rid of all our evil deeds at once. Else, we are soon to meet the last Christmas, literally.
