Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a mega welfare initiative by the Government of India is all set to be launched by Prime Minister of India. The scheme for providing free LPG connections to the BPL households will be launched on 1st May 2016.

The main objective of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is to empower women and protecting their health by providing them clean LPG cooking fuel. Narendra Modi Government has set a target of distributing 5 Crore LPG connections to BPL households by the end of year 2019.

The government has earmarked Rs. 8000 for the implementation of the scheme across the country. Rs. 2000 Crore will be used for the distribution of the connections within the financial year 2016-17. The scheme will be funded by the money saved from the LPG subsidies given up voluntarily under the Give-it-Up campaign launched in January 2015.

Central government will provide a financial assistance of Rs. 1600/- to per eligible BPL household to buy LPG connection. EMI facility to buy stove and cylinder refill under the Ujjwala Yojana.

The identification of the eligible BPL (Below Poverty Line) candidates will be done in coordination with state governments and union territories. The LPG connection will only be given in the name of women person belonging to eligible BPL household.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana also aims to reduce the health hazards among women and children caused by the use of unclean cooking fuel. Use of clean LPG will also help reduce the indoor as well as outdoor pollution up to some extent.

The scheme can prove to be one of the greatest initiative towards uplifting the poor if successful implementation took place.
