It was earlier in the year 2015, when India saw the development of an Aerotropolis city in the state of West Bengal. Durgapur the steel city, located in the in industrial belt of West Bengal, has always been into highlights. It is noted for remarkable developments in the real estate sector as well. Now the city has grown into more popularity after coming up as an airport city, very recently.

The project is named as Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL), which has given the city its newly built airport named after the famous poet of West Bengal – KNI Airport (Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport). It was an old airport located in the nearby town of Andal, which was used by the Para-military forces during the Second World War. BAPL used this abandoned airport and developed it into a new commercial airport. This new airport was formed as a part of the Aerotropolis concept.

The airport has an area of 600 acres and was developed at a cost of Rupees six hundred fifty crores. It is at a distance of about 15 kms from the main Durgapur city. The airport is surrounded by small towns of Burdawan, Durgapur, Bankura, Andal, Suri, Purulia, Shantinikitan, Dhanbad and Bokaro.
BAPL developed this Aerotropolis city, under the guidance from Singapore’s Changi Airports International. It is a company that has developed many such Aerotropolis cities in the past, some of which include: Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai Aerotropolis.

The airport has all the latest infrastructures that make it an ideal airport city. It enjoys all the amenities of an Aerotropolis such as having a big passenger terminal, which can handle about 1 million passengers in a year. It has many branded and retails outlets, Food and Beverage kiosks, ATMs, Clinic and pharmacy, convenience stores, spa and Wi-Fi Services.

The second part of this Aerotropolis has a skycity, which is a big residential township. It has all the facilities of an urban town. It is meant for the people belonging to middle and lower income group. The price ranges from five lakhs to fifteen lakhs that can be affordable by all classes. Mr. Partha Ghosh has laid the foundation for Sujalam skycity with a mission to provide affordable housing for all. Not only this, Mr. Partha Ghosh takes this BAPL project to reach great heights. The total project has all the amenities that an Aerotropolis, is supposed to have. Apart from the residential township this airport city has, it has entertainment centres, educational institutions, Schools, colleges, universities, shopping malls, IT parks, engineering colleges, and super-specialty hospitals etc.

Author’s bio: Mr. Partha Ghosh, who is the Managing Director of BAPL, confirms a launch of another Aerotropolis city in the state of Punjab. Mr. Partha Ghosh also formed a residential township, and named it Sujalaam skycity.
