There are many Aerotropolis cities around the world. When speaking of the Global situation, in an Aerotropolis, where thousands of daily flyers are added regularly, the consumer populations of many airports become larger than the most medium sized cities. The rise of the airport city has added shopping, leisure, and business support services in its areas.

Airports have always been a medium for transit of passengers and goods throughout centuries. Airports are continuing to develop their public access property with hospitality, entertainment, and recreation centres. Moreover, office and retail complexes, conference and exhibition centres, and facilities for processing time sensitive goods are also been deployed. Some private sectors have also joined in, developing similar facilities just beyond the airport boundaries. The airport cities around the world have gone hi-tech now and so is the India’s first Aerotropolis as well.

Durgapur airport which is also known as - Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, gets connected with the world via technologically advanced Wi-Fi internet connectivity. It has been made available as a free service to the people who use the airport for their transit. The service is provided by Reliance Jio Infocom Limited (RJIL) services. RJIL is an initiative by Reliance Industries Limited (RLI) that is supposed to assist passengers at the Durgapur airport, to enjoy the digital services that the company has built.

The Wi-Fi services comprise of specially designed applications and its rich content that runs on fibre-optic based high speed data networks. The passengers can get connected to the internet for no charges. The only thing they will need is to verify with an SMS that will let them get connected to the Wi-Fi. The login remains activated for 24 hours which gets dis-connected after thirty minutes of de-activity.

The Aerotropolis consists of office buildings, hotels, and a multi-specialty medical centre and a theme park. Airport management is planning further development of offices, hotels, shopping and possibly convention facilities on a large area near its passenger terminal. The airport terminal has a big retail centre, which includes a big screen theatre. Above this there are some office spaces with some big floor area. Future plans are supposed to have a business park, hotels, and leisure and other entertainment options.
