In fact, it is the first ever Skycity that has its own infrastructure in terms of residential plots, business offices, Information Technology hubs, and entertainment centres, which are minutes away from the heart of the Durgapur city. The city is also called the steel city, because of its iron and steel plant, which accommodates many employees to work. The area also holds many other industries that form the backbone of this zone’s economic resources.

Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited  or BAPL introduced the concept of Aerotropolis, based on the future growth prospects of this region. The company believed that as the industries will keep continue to grow, there will be huge increase in the man-power, who will ultimately use the resources as generated by this Aerotropolis. The company estimated in general, the growth in population around the coming years and thus based on such estimations, it did rolled out an entire estate of housing. This housing was meant for the Lower Income Group (LIG) people of the society.

The housing estate has been given a name – The Sujalaam Skycity. It has its own schools, colleges, deemed universities, and other educational hubs. Apart from these, it has medical facilities in form of a multi-disciplinary hospital, where it can accommodate about 1000 beds. The Aerotropolis also has other amenities like – spa, entertainment centres, gymnasium, retail outlets, food court etc. On the whole it is a fully dependable zone that can be looked upon as a complete city with all the amenities confined within.

With the advent of this Aerotropolis at Durgapur, the steel city of West Bengal has now developed into a commercial hub. The BAPL venture has been upheld by a Singapore based organization named - Changi Airports International, who has given the complete technical supports to form the air terminal and its bases. It is one of the biggest Airport administration company on the planet. BAPL has tied up with country’s major air carriers to facilitate the air transit of passengers. They have spoken to GoAir, and IndiGo very recently, and plans are being made further to include Durgapur as their route destination.

The total project has been headed by Mr. Partha Ghosh of Bengal Aerotropolis who has made his dream project to turn out into reality. The company is planning to develop similar projects in other parts of India as well – says Mr. Partha Ghosh (Managing Director) of BAPL.
