Until around a decade back, it was solely a dream to use the Internet for voice calling purposes. It was only after the advent of high-speed Internet that people across the globe start realizing this dream that slowly transformed into the most useful and beneficial part of our lives. Before that, the only option was POPS or Plain Old Phone Services that had some very basic features.

On the other hand, there were several restrictions or stipulations with this system like needing a completely different account for long-distance calling and so on. Additional expenses were something that made it an eyesore for the business owners who had to rely upon them for most of their business operations.

However, with the arrival of the high-speed broadband Internet, there came one more feature that it was easy to use it or calling purposes. The biggest benefit was that the cost of calling [even to overseas locations] was reduced to almost 1/4th of the calling cost of normal telephone system. This was given the name of VoIP phone systems or Voice over Internet Protocol.

Some major differences

·         In the conventional technology, the connection was carried through copper wires, whereas the services came through cables in VoIP.

·         The company is responsible for supplying with a special modem to use the services through the medium of high-speed broadband.

·         The general modem had Analog Telephony Adaptor or ATA, whereas in the other version, the modem had one or two phone jacks.

·         The usual Ethernet jack for connecting to your computer is always present there.

The top features of a VoIP business phone are -

·         Call-Waiting

·         Caller-ID

·         Three-Way-Calling

·         Call Blocking

·         Call Forwarding

·         Distinctive Ring for VIP Callers

·         Long Distance calling (Usually to all counties across the globe)

Before you adopt VoIP phone systems for your office, it is important for you be aware of a major disadvantage associated with them. Power failure at your office would force the modem to shut down in the absence of proper power back up and this means that the broadband connection would stop working too. This would bring the entire communication mechanism to a halt and therefore, to keep this problem away, it is better to have proper power back-up using UPS, INVERTER or electricity generator sets.

Other features

·         Attendant, sometimes referred as the virtual assistant that answers incoming calls with a custom greeting

·         Multiple extensions to route calls to people, message extensions, or even mailbox only extensions

·         Calls between extensions, even remote locations are free

·         Follow Me, also sometimes called "Find Me"

·         Faxes can be received by the hosted PBX system and sent to the user

·         Call Recording by the click of a mouse

·         Music or Message-on-Hold

·         Built-in-conferencing features

·         Call Scheduling, Sometimes referred to as time based routing

·         Call Queue - Allowing calls to wait for an available agent

·         Administration Control Panel where system can be configured, user and account information administered and call detail logs be viewed.
