Durgapur, the Fastest Growing City of West Bengal, Has Now Become an Aerotropolis
Durgapur has a number of industries, out of which the two main are the Alloy Steel Industry and the Durgapur Steel Plant. These industries have given rise to their glowing township. Being attracted by the all-round developments in this sector, a company titled Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) visualised something that went way beyond some normal expectations. It indeed developed this city into an Aerotropolis.
An Aerotropolis is a city that has an airport as its base structure for the socio-economic growth of that region. Furthermore, the infrastructures of that place generate revenues for such project. BAPL visualized the overall development of the city, much before the project was in papers. They had planned out some key points to make this project a grand success. Their main attractions were:
- The project site being located at just 180 Km from Kolkata.
- 3.5 lakh passengers were expected to commute in the first year.
- They had plans to come up with state of the art health facilities, with over 1000 hospital beds.
- Again, they also had Plans to deploy higher education facilities, to cater to 15000 students.
- The industrial and Information Technology park was under the plans to create over 83000 new jobs.
Having the above attractions in mind, the company BAPL, thought of up bringing the India’s first ever Aerotropolis city. And today, the whole project is fully operational and functioning. Not only this, the brain behind all these stuff, Mr. Partha Ghosh of Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited announced the formation of Sujalaam – the Sky city right into the heart of this city. He projected this city as a LIG (Lower Income Group) housing sector, where the plan was to provide housing for all. The LIG flats ranges from five lakhs to fifteen lakhs, which can easily be categorised into real cheap housing.
Airports have always been looked upon as a powerful engine of socio-economic development. It attracts air-commerce and some other linked businesses to flow in. Other than the airport, some other business boosters are:
- Industrial Parks
