The Aerotropolis around the world till now are playing key roles in global production and enterprise development that offers speed and connectivity – the two major issues – that are required for the overall developments of a city. Dr. John D Kasarda was the person who defined the term Aerotropolis, which works with aviation, people, and cities to promote airports for the economic developments.

In India it was Mr. Partha Ghosh, of Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL), who brought this whole new concept in to action and implemented it in the Durgapur city for the first time. In the year 2015 his dream turned into reality, when he inaugurated the successful set-up of this aero-city. The total project took about six years to complete. Now the Durgapur Aerotropolis is being seen as a powerful engine that is boosting up the socio-economic infrastructures of the region. It is being said that the rapid expansion of aviation linked businesses are making the air transport a gateway towards the 21 century. The airports now have not only remained confined to the transit of passengers and goods, but they have become an all new business hub that generates revenues for the societal developments of the city, state and the whole of country.

Durgapur Aerotropolis runs on two parallel phases. One leads towards the newly constructed airport that is named after a famous poet of West Bengal – Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (or, KNI Airport) and another is a big residential township named – Sujalaam – the skycity. An Aerotropolis is expected to deliver some must have amenities. Among them a few are – schools, colleges, other educational institutions, universities, shopping malls, entertainment centres, food and beverage outlets, fashion stores, hospitals, and a residential complex. Durgapur Aerotropolis enjoys all of these amenities.

The KNI airport was build using an old abandoned airbase at the small town of Andal, which is just adjacent to this Durgapur city. The company developed this old airport into a commercial airport, which is spread at an area of 600 square kilo meters. The total cost of developing it came to about Rupees six hundred crores.

Mr. Partha Ghosh who is also the managing Director of BAPL, has developed the Sujalaam Skycity in a most planned manner. The residential complex has a 1000 beds multi-speciality hospital, and schools in very close proximity of the complex. The Sujalaam skycity is spread over an area of 2318 square ft. area. BAPL developed this residential township in three phases – LIG, MIG and HIG sectors. The prices have been set similarly as well. They have kept the price range for these plots between Rupees five lakhs and fifteen lakhs.
