Durgapur - A Giant Leap from Small Town to Aerotropolis
An Aerotropolis means an airport city. It is a whole new concept still, especially for the countries who has never seen it before. In India, it has been introduced too late. Other countries like Hongkong, Dubai, Singapore etc. had formed an Aerotropolis long before. Here in India it was about a year back when it was only a plan for the future, but today it is working as a successful business venture. Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) – a company in West Bengal, India, master planned this project, where an airport city was developed to reshape the concept of its city airport to airport city.
Mr. Partha Ghosh, the Managing Director of BAPL was the first person to visualize this concept of developing an Aerotropolis in the semi urban town of West Bengal state. The company wanted to make use of all the readily available resources and for this; they planned using an old military airport and transform it into a fully commercial one. It was a small town named Andal, near Durgapur city, which was used to form this newly developed airport.
An Aerotropolis should have some basic infrastructure that can be used as its full potential features in the development of the economic conditions of the whole region. These infrastructures could be the following:
- Special manufacturing and distribution centres
- Retail centres
- Wholesale establishments
- Entertainment centres
- Transportation hub
- Business centres
- Research and technology parks
- Educational institutions
- Information technology hubs
- Free trade zones
- Special economic zones
- Convention centres
- Exhibition centres
- Hotels
- Offices
Other than the above, an Aerotropolis also should have a residential township that has its very own physical and organizational structures. All of these together act as the basics towards the operations of its society. The Bengal Aerotropolis project covers all of the above features. They indeed developed a skycity named Sujalaam Skycity which had come up as a big housing society to accommodate all classes of people. They have introduced plots that range from Rupees five lakhs to fifteen lakhs. The plots they have rolled out are divided under three categories – LIG, MIG and HIG complexes. The skycity has high rise towers, swimming pool, spa, education institutions, and hospitals all within the same premises. Mr. Partha Ghosh formed this Sujalaam skycity as a part of this Aerotropolis because he had a foresight that allowed him to think out of the box and he had a mind-set to let the city of Durgapur turnout in to a full-fledged Aerotropolis.
Author’s bio: Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited is a reputed infrastructure company. Mr. Partha Ghosh as the key person behind BAPL has put all his efforts into action, to bring out the new face of Bengal in form of an Aerotropolis city. Mr. Partha Ghosh was also the first to discover the Sujalaam skycity that has facilitated affordable housing for all in the region.
