Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited Launches an Airport City in Durgapur
After the developed Aerotropolis city-states of Hong Kong, Singapore, and Dubai, the proposed Durgapur Aerotropolis project is expected to bring out similar socio-economic growth in Durgapur that can make Durgapur into another metropolitan city, right after Kolkata, in the state of West Bengal.
The total project is headed by a private company named Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL). The company is working in accordance with Changi Airports International that is one of the largest airport-management companies in the world. It has 26% equity stake in BAPL.
An Aerotropolis can be defined as a term for a city that has an airport as its base for the layout, infrastructure, and economic growth of the place. Hence, it can also be called as an airport city. BAPL states that the project will have an airport, corporate spaces, schools, shopping areas, housing, industrial park, and an IT hub – all located within an area of 2,300 acres.
Other than this, BAPL is also engaged in developing similar projects in some other places in India. The proposed and next project in the queue is Ludhiana Aerotropolis. BAPL is all set to mark a difference between a traditional city airport to the newly conceptualized airport city.
BAPL is also developing a sky city titled as ‘Sujalaam’. The city is going to allow people balancing a lifestyle that will superimpose the lifestyle that they now have. The skycity is going to be an economic hub-promoting tourism that will be boosting educational resources and providing new opportunities in the field of services, IT, telecommunication, retail markets, hospitality, agro-processing, and bio-technology. Other than these, it is also going to have a residential township.
In recent times, airports have become multifunctional and multi-model role enterprises, which can generate commercial developments within their boundaries. ‘Sujalaam’ is located in the Asansol-Durgapur region of the state of West Bengal. Spread over an area of 1,616 square kilometers, the project is bound by two rivers on its north and south. The total project has been engineered to show up excellence. Partha Ghosh, BAPL says that the company possesses many similar projects in the pipeline.
