Aerotropolis stands for airport city. The recent developments in the aviation industry have given rise to a concept where a traditional city transforms into an airport city. An airport city is one which has its land, infrastructure and economy all dependants on the revenues that the airport earns. Till now it was a buzzword in western countries only, but very recently after the launch of India’s first Aerotropolis, it has rooted its base in India as well and it is about to expand its wings in the other places.

In India, very recently an Aerotropolis city has been formed in the state of West Bengal. It was the year 2015 when this country saw its first Aerotropolis. Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) is a company that has formed this Aerotropolis city in West Bengal. They developed this in coordination with a Singapore based company named Changi Airports International, who has given their expertise to develop the city of Durgapur into an airport city.

The company BAPL has raised this city into a modern Aerotropolis that has built an airport around the existing city of Durgapur and placed all the amenities of an Aerotropolis. They built an ultra-modern airport, a large residential complex, educational institutions, schools, colleges, deemed universities, recreational centres, shopping malls, entertainment hubs, and Information Technology hubs.

Mr. Partha Ghosh, who is the Managing Director of BAPL, is heading the company. The whole concept was the brain child of Mr. Partha Ghosh who had always dreamt of making the state of West Bengal a better place to live in. Mr. Partha Ghosh not only did had plans to develop this old city in to a newly blooming Aerotropolis, but he also developed a huge residential township and named it as Sujalaam Skycity. This initiative was taken with a mission to provide affordable housing for all.

The idea of developing an Aerotropolis was formed seeing the massive growth in the aviation oriented businesses. It is India’s first private Greenfield airport. The airport is built over an area of about 600 acres of land and has a long air-strip, which can accommodate big aircrafts that may include Boeing 707. The airport previously was an old military base which was used by the US soldiers in the Second World War. It was a real wise step to transform this old airport into a new commercial one and has cut down much cost than it would have taken to develop an airport from scratch. Moreover the airport is now fully operational and is running daily flights from Durgapur to New Delhi and vice versa.

Author’s bio: Mr. Partha Ghosh has gained much reputation by far, to develop and master the whole project of BAPL. It is for the efforts of Mr. Partha Ghosh only, which has given the people of Durgapur their first Aerotropolis residential complex called Sujalaam Skycity.
