The Profitable Pen - A Guide to Writing Articles That Pay

by Ethan Robert Digital Marketing Consultant

Writing articles can be a great way to earn an income. However, it is not always guaranteed that you will get paid.

Fortunately, there are many sites that pay for your writing. This guide will show you how to submit your work and get paid for it. It will also cover other ways to earn from your writing, including content writing and freelance ghostwriting.

1. Find a niche

While a good freelance writer can write about just about anything, choosing a niche is a way to focus your efforts and attract clients and get profit from the internet. When people need content written, they don't look for the freelancer who says, "Hey, I can write about anything." Instead, they hire a writer who specializes in what they need.

For example, technical writers specialize in writing manuals and documentation for complex products. They typically are former engineers or coders who can write about complicated technologies at a level that even an engineer could understand.

Before launching into any new business you must understand the end results which chiefly means the returns on your investments. This can be achieved by performing feasibility analysis by yourself, meeting people involved in the business or appointing a third party firm to do it for you. Then you can make a decision whether or not to go ahead with the pen manufacturing business. If you go ahead then it is wise to begin your own retail shop to increase the profit margin.

2. Write about it

When you've found your subject and angle, start writing. You can write about your own experiences, like traveling, or you can write about something that interests people in your market, such as a topical figure, such as Peter Thiel, a trend, such as the rise of virtual reality, or even an event, such as the fall of the Soviet Union. Alternatively, you can focus on a solution to a problem: how to save money by using public transportation.

3. Get paid

Getting profit from writing articles is a great way to start a lucrative career as a writer. However, it takes time to build up your reputation and customer base. It’s also important to choose a niche that fits your skills and interests. If your article is too broad, you’ll have a harder time finding publishers who will publish it.

Some websites that pay writers for their work include Business Insider and Reuters. These publications feature thought-provoking, in-depth articles that cover a variety of topics. If you have a strong understanding of business topics, you might want to consider pitching an idea to these publications.

Other sites that pay for article submissions include Transitions Abroad, which pays up to $150 for articles ranging from 1250-3000+ words. Transitions Abroad focuses on cultural immersion travel, working, living and volunteering abroad. The Chicken Soup for the Soul book series also pays writers $200 if their story or poem is published in an edition of the book.
