by Akash Sharma Akash Sharma
While certain risk factors that cause breast cancer cannot be prevented, there are certain things which can definitely be kept under your control. Remember, prevention starts with healthy habits! To reduce the likelihood, here are some things you can do to maintain your breast health and prevent chances of breast cancer-

Keep A Watch Over Your Weight

Being obese can increase your chances of breast cancer. Since the fat tissues are responsible for producing estrogen after menopause, having more of it can significantly increase your chances of getting breast cancer. Additionally, the level of insulin is also high in women who are obese. Higher insulin is not only related to high blood sugar levels but can also increase the probability of breast cancer.

Exercise Frequently

As per leading oncologist Dr Sidharth Sahni, physical activity and exercise can help prevent breast cancer. Try to build things up gradually but do make it a point to work out for at least half an hour every day. You can even indulge in activities such as aerobics or yoga along with strength training over weekends. In case you are a newbie, brisk walk is a good way to start with.

Limit Alcohol- Consume Fruits And Veggies Instead

A healthy diet can help prevent a lot of diseases including breast cancer. While a moderate level of drinking can actually be beneficial for your heart, over-consumption can increase your chances of breast cancer. Hence, if you don’t drink, no need to start either and if you drink over, it’s time to cut down or quit.

Limit Hormone Therapy

You are at a higher risk of breast cancer if you have been taking combination hormone therapy for more than three years. If menopausal symptoms have mandated the need, it’s time to look for other options. If it’s very necessary, go for low dosage and consult with your doctor regarding the duration.

Quit Smoking

Even those who smoke know how unhealthy smoking is and if you are one of those who do, it’s time to stop. Apart from lowering your quality of life, regular smoking can increase your chances of stroke, heart diseases and about 15 types of cancers. Not to miss, bad breath and wrinkles! Hence, it’s time to go smoke-free.

Avoid Radiation Exposure

Unless very necessary, avoid tests such as computerized tomography which uses high doses of radiation. According to research, there is a link between breast cancer and radiation exposure. Hence, you must avoid such tests whenever possible.
