A Business Model for review

by Don Dousharm Entrepreneur, Publisher

After rolling over in my head for many months I have decided to roll out a new business model for an old type business.

For many years I have been involved in some form or another in the buying and selling of Digital Content, or known as E-Books. Now I have had many bumps in the road and one of them was the moral implication of selling E-Books.

What Are E-Books is the best question to start with I think:

Wikipedia explains it best if I may use a quote from them!

An electronic book (also e-book, ebook, digital book) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, and produced on, published through, and readable on computers or other electronic devices.

Please let me explain the moral implications that I have been dealing with. I have found many turn against the sale of E-books and from what I gather the reasons go like this.

Many believe that E-Books are nothing more than re-hashed plr, (Text with Private Label Rights) articles that have been thrown together into a pdf format, (Portable Document Format). Some new graphics have been added and a new cover made. I believe this to be true in some cases. I don’t believe this is true in every E-Book made. I guess the question I have asked myself is this;

Do I still find value in E-Books? My answer is yes and here is the reason why.

I have had many times where I was a bit green on how to do a particular task. I didn’t really have the time to go searching through the internet and start compiling the information that I needed to become fluent in what I was trying to accomplish. Yes I am willing to pay a few bucks for a program that is laid out for me and understandable where I actually learn something.

Of course there are reputations of authors and there are ones that are virtually unknown. Some you just feel more confident in following their recommendations based on text read and how helpful they have been in the past. Some may have a new how-to that is fresh and new to the times and I may be willing to take a chance, and I have in the past. Guess What? It paid off too!

The bottom line is that I do find value in E-books, even with all the junk that is put out their. The question you have to ask yourself is; If it still helps you in some kind of way is it still junk? I am not going to pretend that this doesn’t exist. That would be like saying that spam doesn’t exist either. But I will stay on the moral side of this business as I have a conscience and value that over all. With all that said, please let me go on to the structure of this business I have carefully laid out for all to see!

Business Model:

In brief this is a blog that carries a shopping cart and gives incentives for others to also profit from. I have sources dating back that allow me to acquire digital content that has not been circulated to a point where it has become useless.

The concept behind this business is to incorporate the Wordpress platform with Facebook Business Page and run it completely through Facebook. Facebook has given this opportunity by going with (IFrame as apposed to FBML). I gathered that this was the intention of Facebook all along. Being able to run a complete business through business pages is a golden opportunity and my hope is to take the use of this system and pioneer the concept.

Title: Digital Content Mastery

I come by this name because it is the nature of the business. I have been involved with the buying and selling of every aspect of the Digital Content, IE: E-Book business on the internet since 1996. I dealt in the marketing rights for most products in this field. In those days things were much different as buying the rights to a product was much more expensive than today and the distribution rights where more complicated. Today the distribution rights have been defined to a point where it is very to understand just what rights you have to a product. A professional marketer and publisher will set the rules as to not spoil the goods so to speak.

For this reason and the 13 or 14 years that I have been dealing with product of this nature I can qualify for my title.

Outline Of The Business:

The design is based on Wordpress and Facebook:

Over the past year it has become a reality that Facebook is the best known platform for getting the word out. Now that Facebook bases it’s Business Pages on IFrame it has become clear that you can now base your entire business on Facebook Business Pages.

I have built my blog and store front through Wordpress and placed it inside of Facebook Business Page. You do not have to go outside of Facebook to access everything related to Digital Content Mastery. This is something that adds convenience to anyone who visits.  The site is completely interactive and is completely functional within this platform.

The design and layout is easy and very easy to navigate to make the experience of browsing the site a pleasure. I have also added a few features to the shopping cart that will help create a viral following.

The shopping cart is built on the Wordpress platform and also makes it seamless to the blog and on to Facebook Business Pages. In the shopping cart there is a built in share button that will give you a coupon for 10% off your next purchase just for sharing the item with Facebook and Twitter. Creating incentive for a viral affect is 9/10ths of the law…

Another incentive is a built in affiliate program that will pay 50% on all items sold through your link. The program is very easy as you only have to be registered with wordpress to use it. (Wordpress requires you to register in order to comment on a blog).

I must let you know that this is a new born program and like anything else it has its bugs.

For example:

In the affiliate area you get a list of links that has your personal signature built into the link but I am having issues with distinguished parameters to identify the product in question.  This is a very inconsistent way of doing things but being the program is young, (Less than 6 months old) I have to wait until the program is written by the creator.

The other problem is that the Shopping cart and affiliate programs are based on the Wordpress Short Code Platform and is like learning another language so it takes up valuable time and is inconvenient for me and time is money.

This is basically my new business that has not launched in an official capacity as of yet but I am hopeful. When I am sure that this is the right direction I will invest in improving on the platform that I am using and build on that. I also have a domain name secured for the site but I am waiting to see how everything progresses. If that does happen I will list the business with the BBB and achieve a tax stamp. No trademark is required but that will be a consideration and a goal.

I hope I get some great feedback from writing this article as it is important that I understand where most people are in business today. Constructive criticism is very helpful and can influence ones morel and ethical direction.

Thanks for reading.

Don, E-books can be valuable if you seek information. In fact i started my online adventure with buying a 5 dollar e-book. It prevented me from making some beginner mistakes. I have no idea of this was an original or a rehashed e-book. But it had value for me and far more than the 5 dollar i paid for it. The time after I downloaded more e-books on the same subject. I stopped very quickly with that since they all basically told the things I already read in the first one.

However there are many membership sites where totally over valued rehashed E-book and software packages are labeled as membership benefits that can be found for free and where the core business is getting paid referrals. I do have a problem with that because i consider those scams.

I do not have a problem with an individual sale of an e-book since as I stated it can be valuable for a person in providing information.

As for your fan page I took a look. I saw a nice graphic but it was not clickable.

Wasn't sure which tag you preferred to be branded for, cause it's best to add tags that can be reused, in my opinion. I chose "business model" cause you seem to do a lot of thinking on the subject. Cool article, btw :)

@ Paula- If you are talking about the logo it is because everything is accessible right there on the page. If it was something else let me know and I will fix it. The one thing I wish to do is provide real value for the money. My sources are on the up and up and I will only sell quality that I feel will be helpful. I too have seen the junk that is given away for free and I try to stay away. If you noticed that most of the titles I carry in my store are not circulated to death. I am not finished as I have some really good text you won't see anywhere else and it will be featured. I think that in any business, no matter what it is you have to give good quality over and over again. That is the nature of being successful. I plan on helping to direct people away from all that scamming and garbage we see everywhere. Thank you for your comment Paula it's very helpful.

I understand Paula. Sounds to me like I need a better clarification as an approach. Perhaps a series of articles explaining my purpose would be in order and a satellite site leading to Digital Content Mastery. Hmmm very good thanks.

Hi, Don, it seems like you are doing a lot of work and then relying upon free resources to capitalise on it. The WP platform has proven to be very reliable but needs work to be hacker-proof. FB is simply a hacker's paradise and I have doubts about the security of your products. You have also chosen to lock out all those people who are not on FB. Despite the size of the FB membership, there are still MORE people in English speaking countries NOT on FB than those that are. Internet marketer gurus have sold FB as a huge market place when, in reality, many members (probably a vast majority) use their accounts rarely and fan pages are of more interest to other marketers who are trying to sell to you. Since only FB members can access your marketing message, are you not deliberately reducing the marketing effectiveness of your work?

@ The Old Coot- Thanks for your comment. You do pose an interesting question. In a way yes I am using mostly free resources to establish the ground floor IE: Facebook, Wordpress as most everyone does. As far as limitations I suppose you can say that but I feel that Facebook Business pages are very young and there is a whole new world yet to discover. I have been re-thinking my strategy a bit as to how to bring the (outside of the Facebook box) to me. I think that building on this idea is good and weather or not it makes it is another story, but I am willing to give it every chance. Remember there are over 700 million people on Facebook alone and if I can establish this as a legitimate opportunity that actually pays off then growing is inevitable.

As far as security goes, I am aware of the hacking as it has happened to me in the past. The platform for the shopping cart and affiliate program has worked with me and showed me ways to secure the download area. As far as your or anyone's money is concerned the security will be handled by them because I don't require anything more than an email account. I do have the ability for other payment platforms but I don't see the necessity of that until I can establish this system as is.

Hi, Don, if you have not seen this page, http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics, you should find it very interesting. Looking at the statistics, FB has an English speaking pond that is not growing significantly and yet more and more fishing lines are being cast into it. As with so much internet marketing information, you need to look beneath the bare statistics to discover what the REAL opportunities are. It would seem that loads of new stuff is added into FB every day and that a high percentage of this is addressing the membership as potential buyers while the rest is promoting the basic aspect of FB - socialising.
