Ahh, Bangalore, the city of dreams. Located in the South Indian state of Karnataka, Bangalore is one of the advanced metropolitan cities in our country. Known for its sophisticated buildings, rich culture, palaces, palace-like political building, wild nightlife, temples, restaurants, and shops, Bangalore has it all. 

And that includes hill stations. Although predominantly known for its IT industry and technological hubbub, Bangalore has an array of splendid hill stations that are just a car drive away.

This list contains hills stations found at about a two hundred and kilometre radius within Bangalore.

Nandi Hills, Karnataka

Located around 60 kilometres away from Bangalore, this little place is situated at the height of 4851 feet above sea level. It is named after the famous Nandi Temple situated at the top of the hill. The River Arkavathi and Palar also originate from here.

  • How to Reach:
    • By Road: 63 km from Bangalore city, it takes 1 hour 30 minutes to reach Nandi Hills. There are Government and Private Buses that run from Bangalore.
    • By Rail: Nearest railway station Chikkaballapur, 42 km away, and takes about 0.5-1 hour to reach.
  • Best time to visit: October to June.


Savandurga, Karnataka

One of the largest monoliths in the world, this hill station is supposed to be located around 4025 feet above sea level. A popular trekking spot is situated 60 km to the west of the city of Bangalore. 

It consists of two hills, the white and the black hill, that offer a gentle and rough slope suited for any trekkers. Savandurga hills make for a tranquil and picturesque trek and overlook a beautiful lotus pond. A pleasant tourist spot, Savandurga is a must-see place. 

How to Reach:

    • By Road: There are two options to travel to Savandurga, i.e., private vehicle or Bus. You can either take Mysore Road or Magadi Road.
    • By Rail: Take a train up to Magadi. Savandurga and Magadi are around 12 km away from each other. 
  • Best Time to Visit: November-May.


BR Hills

One of Karnataka’s popular hill stations in the BR Hills. Located about 175 kilometers away from Bangalore, BR Hills, officially called the Biligiriranga Hills, is a hill range. 

This destination is popular for taking road trips. BR Hills is a go-to spot for listeners, thinkers, and watchers with wondrous hills, trees as old as time, swirling roads, and a sense of peace. Who wants not to spend their time among the echoes of mountains. To see their stoic presence guard over us?

How to Reach:

    • By Road: 217 km away from Bangalore, you can catch a bus from the KSRTC Satellite Bus Stand to reach BR Hills. It will take you roughly 4-5 hours to reach your destination.
    • By Rail: The nearest station is in Mysore, at a distance of 64 km from BR Hills. It will take you an hour via railway.
  • Best Time to Visit: All year-round.


Ooty, Tamil Nadu

Ooty is a beautiful, calm, and picturesque location. Known for its ethereal outlook, Ooty is considered a major tourist attraction. This city is littered with shops and places to visit. Hosting several stellar resorts, take your pick to get the most out of this wonderful pace. 

How to Reach:

    • By Road: 374 km from Bangalore.
    • By Rail: Mettupalayam, 47 km from Ooty, has the nearest railway station. A toy train connects Ooty.
  • Best Time to Visit: March to June.


Munnar, Kerala

Munnar offers its visitors to visually feast on acres of land spent on tea plantations, roads that weave patterns onto the ground, and the smell of chai everywhere you go. 

You can feel the clouds pass through your body. The cool breeze, tranquil backwaters, swaying palm trees offer an exquisite experience. 

  • How to Reach:
    • By Road: 480 km from Bangalore city, it takes 9 hours to reach Munnar. You can take a bus or hire a taxi and can reach Munnar
    • By Rail: Nearest railway station Coimbatore and then you can hire a taxi
  • Best Time to Visit: September to March.


Yercaud, Tamil Nadu

A treasure haven in Tamil Nadu. Yercaud is cradled in the Shivaroy Hills of Tamil Nadu; Yercaud is a hill station in the Eastern Ghats. 

Blessed with rows and rows of greenery, it is commonly called ‘Ooty of the Poor’; this region has a history dating back to the time of the British. Located at an altitude of 4970 feet, it hosts acres of coffee plantations and beautiful weather.

  • How to Reach:
    • By Road: Located at a distance of 230 km, it takes around 5 hours to reach Yercaud from Bangalore.
    • By Rail: Salem Junction is the nearest railway stop near Yercaud at a distance of 38 km from the hill station.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to June.


Vagamon, Kerala

Wagamon, or maybe you know it as Vagamon, is a quiet offbeat hill station in Kerala. A place that looks as beautiful as it sounds offers a pleasant year-round climate. 

Vagamon is a popular tourist spot consisting of tea estates, pine forests, waterfalls, and hill stations. If you want a slow tour that will allow you to take leisure walks while breathing in the aromatic air, Vagamon is the place for you. 

How to Reach:

    • By Road: The best and most direct way to travel between the two places is via bus. 
    • By Rail: Book a train to the nearest railway station, i.e. Kottayam which is about 63.2 kilometers away from there. 
  • Best Time to Visit: Throughout the year.
