Tips for the Photographer in handling a Model

One of the hardest part of having a Photo studioshoot or an Outdoor Photo shoot is having an inexperienced model do a pose for you.  It’s very difficult at first if your model looks at you and she’s waiting for your signal or direction to do a pose.  The answer for this is preparation – as a photographer you have to have a suggested pose inside your pocket.

Before the big day

Whether it’s an outdoor shoot or Photo studio shoot, you also have to assess what kind of shoot you want to portray.  By this, you can select what kind of poses you want.  You can brief your model about your ideas so she should now also what to do on the day of the event.  

I usually ask my model to do a research over the internet of sample pose and do it in front of the mirror. I let them do it week before the shoot, this will help them boost their confidence and knowledge in posing in front of the camera.  They can download it and save it in their smart phone.  One suggestion also is for you to download a posing app – it will give you different poses that your model can use.  Simply show it to your model and let her do it, and make sure that she’s comfortable with it before firing that camera.  

During the big day

Build a bond with your model. Make sure that she sees that you know what you’re doing during the shoot.  Because she will also work professional and work had for the shoot. Let him or her relax as possible. When model are tense it will show in the photographs, and the photographs will be not good as expected. So make sure that you build his or her confidence before and during the photo shoot.  

During the shoot, make sure to capture her natural expression.  Don’t be shy to direct or control her movements and poses.  If she looks unnatural in one of the poses, let her adopt to it until she feel relax and natural.  Keep everything simple as possible don’t make it complicated for you and your model.
