Thapar University: Know all about it!

Founded in 1956, Thapar University a private university located in Patiala, Punjab. It was earlier known as Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology; in 1985 it was granted full autonomy and the status of a university by the UGC – University Grants Commission.

In last five decades, the varsity has expanded in terms of infrastructure, students enrolled and overall activities. It was ranked at 5th position in a survey of Engineering Colleges conducted by CSR-GHRDC.

One of the facts that the university brags about is its Alumni, called as Thaparians. Thapar University has got one of the best Alumni network in the country. The alumni hold top most positions in the corporate world both in India as well as abroad. A majority of the alumni base holds positions of CEOs, MDs, CFOs and also has presence at top positions in public sector units.

Today, the university is counted among the leading private technical institutions in the country. Moreover, it has received A grade from National Assessment and Accreditation Council which indicates that the university meets the benchmark of quality education. To impart global standard of education it has also collaborated with Trinity College in Dublin.

The campus comprises of seven academic blocks, namely A, B, C, D, E, F and a recently established TAN block. All the blocks are well built and have lush green surroundings. The campus has six hostels for boys, each one of them has a gym, a reading room and a common room. In addition, there is cooperative canteen system in each of the hostels.

The campus also has an in-house market called COS (Cultural Open-air Sports) which has variety of shops where students can eat, drink, get their laundry done and buy stationery items.

The university offers undergraduate programmes that award Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree and postgraduate programmes awarding Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Software Engineering, Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degrees after the course completion.

To study B.Tech at Thapar University aspirants have to appear for JEE-Main, whereas students who seek to take admission to postgraduate programmes are required to appear for MET exam.
