The world today is a demanding place, and expectations are high for students. Students face challenges today that were once unimaginable, and the stakes are higher than ever. Society has benefited from the ideas and innovations of great figures during the past 100 years. If that trend is going to continue, then a strong education system is needed. Students today must be challenged in ways that make them think, and the current trends of education must change if that is going to happen.

Students in boarding high schools and other institutions need to be challenged. For too long, expectations have been low for students across the country. What once was an exciting learning process that challenged youth has become a series of state-mandated requirements and testing. One could even argue that state standardized tests have washed out quality education. Too many students are now taught to only memorize and learn the test material. By doing this, society is crippling students and robbing them of their potential. Students need to think and not memorize.

How does one go about this? In boarding high schools, students are taught a wide variety of topics that lead them astray from the standardized test material. While it is important to track students’ progress, it is also important not to place tremendous stress on the testing system. Learning should be a discovery of sorts. It should also prepare students to think for themselves, not prepare them to memorize everything. Memorization may help someone pass a test, but it is not going to help someone make important life decisions.

Boarding high schools that teach students to think for themselves prepare them for a difficult and often unforgiving world. It is a necessary skill that both colleges and employers expect. It is truly knowing how to think rather than knowing random facts that prepare students for excellence in the workforce. Employers expect students to know how to think on their feet and make decisions. Lowering the expectations in learning institutions only hurts students. Beyond the workforce, these skills taught in school can also help students live overall happy and healthy lives.

The future should be bright for students in schools today. Boarding high schools have the chance to make sure that they are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in the world. Anyone can become successful as long as he or she is given the right opportunities and taught the right way.
