Unlike at regular high schools when students go home after school, at private boarding schools students have some free time in the afternoon, at nights and on weekends. How the students use that free time is up to them. Different schools offer different free time options, but for the most part there is always something to do while at a private boarding school.

Study Hall

Perhaps the best and most exciting way to spend free time at private boarding schools is in study hall. Most schools have a study hall for a couple of hours during the nighttime on weeknights. This helps students keep up with their studies while academic advisors are around and available to help students with any questions they have.

Student Center

Most boarding schools have some sort of student center that students can hang out at during their free time. Depending on the school, the student center can include a gym, pool, Ping-Pong, air-hockey and board games. Student centers are typically open during anytime that students have scheduled free time. This helps students stay healthy and in shape while away at school.

Recreation Trips

Lots of private boarding schools offer recreation trips on the weekends. Depending on the location of the boarding school and the surrounding environment, some schools offer outdoor activities like rock climbing, hiking, camping, snowshoeing and skiing. Along with outdoor activities, many schools offer cultural offerings and community service opportunities. Cultural offerings can include musical performance, comedy shows, theatrical productions and much more.  Additionally, trips to local shopping malls, bowling alleys and movie theaters are also an option for students.

Local Hangouts

While some of the recreation trips can seem overwhelming after a long week of classes, most private boarding schools offer some sort of local hangout where students can relax and recover from a busy week. These include coffee shops as well as grassy areas where students can hang out with friends.
