Sperm Freezing Process

by Joanne P. Health Enthusiast
Sperm freezing refers to the freezing and storage of a man's sperm; it can also be referred to as cryopreservation. Stored sperm or "banked sperm" can be frozen indefinitely until it is needed for assisted reproductive procedures, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), or sperm donation.

Sperm freezing goes through three steps before it is ready for in vitro fertilization.

Extraction process

There are three primary methods of sperm extraction, the first and most straightforward method to extract a sperm sample is via masturbation. The second method is slightly more complicated and is reserved for men who suffer from paralysis or spinal injuries. However, electroejaculation may require a general anesthetic. Or, the father to be can opt for a surgical extraction, but it will require epidermal sperm aspiration.

Men are typically suggested to freeze two to five samples, but they are at liberty to give as many samples they want for sperm banking. We recommend abstaining from sexual intercourse and ejaculation for at least two days but not longer than five days prior to extracting the first sample, and for about two days between the samples.

Storage and freezing

Sperm can be stored indefinitely, so you can keep it in the sperm bank and take it out after ten or after 55 years, depending on when you decide to use it during IVF. Note that time in storage does not affect the effectivity as sperm; it is as viable fresh as it is when it is thawed.

Thawing

To thaw a sperm sample, the vial will sit at room temperature for half an hour. Once the sperm has completed thawing, the contents of the vial will liquify. And then you need to warm the vial to body temperature in your hands or under your arm before it is inseminated. Note that thawed sperm cannot be re-frozen as it loses its viability.

Once the sperm has been through this process, it undergoes implantation during the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. And the outcome, hopefully, is a healthy baby and the joy of parenthood.
