On Being a First Time Mother

by Joanne P. Health Enthusiast
Being a mother is a challenge. But nobody can tell the real feeling that comes out of being a mother without actually being one. The truth is that mothers don’t exactly know what they are doing -- they simply learn along the way without visibly showing their confusion. Whether you conceived naturally or through a high IVF success rate, the experience is most likely the same for all mothers.

What’s it like to be a first time mother?

“Why is he crying?”

Imagine this: being on a survival venture with a person who doesn’t speak in English while your leg is bleeding from a vicious animal bite. Being a first-time mother means having to translate, decipher and determine what your baby wants. But before you do, you have to test out the waters with everything that can be made available. Soon, you’ll master the art of trade with your baby and learn what he/she actually means when he/she is crying.

Having Identity Crisis

Having an identity crisis is common for mothers, hence, hence the saying, “Once a mom, always a mom.” When you’re a mother, your emotions and awareness are at its heightened state. It’s common for mothers to be quite moody. However, as your child ages, you should learn to regulate your aggressiveness as your actions may scar your child’s self-esteem even if you’re doing it because of “love”.

Joy and Bliss

Being a mother is a different kind of happy -- the kind of joy you cannot explain. The joy of caring, loving and seeing your children grow just makes you accomplished. In fact, a lot of mothers claimed of having attained enlightenment when they conceived their first child.

More Surprises

What your aunts said about motherhood is only 20% of what you will actually experience. Babies react differently and it’s up to you to listen to your aunts -- or listen to your child. Additionally, the more connected you are with your child, the more you practice what they call a “mother’s intuition”. Experience by hand is still the best teacher.

Extra Tip: Being a mother is not a competition. What works for other babies may not work with yours. It’s important to be vigilant and aware of your baby’s cues to know more about him/her.

Every woman deserves a child to care for and nurture because of the beauty and nature that is already in the woman.
