Factors That Affect Sperm Health

by Joanne P. Health Enthusiast
Sperm health plays a significant factor in male fertility. How healthy your sperm is will determine whether the couple will conceive children or not. Men need to take care of their sperm health to make sure they are able to have children in the future.

For men who suffer from sperm issues, you can either ask your local fertility specialist about how to better your sperm health or avail of IVF treatment in Davao.

Alcohol
Alcohol misuse can damage sperm production in one of two ways. First, it may boost the production of estrogen by the liver, which can lower sperm count. Also, alcohol can directly poison the sperm-producing cells of the testicle. Limit your alcohol consumption when you are striving to improve your fertility.

Diet
A balanced diet is key to living a healthy lifestyle. Studies have shown that consuming an excessive amount of fast-food decreased sperm health in men. Eating a balanced diet helps sperm develop properly and improve sperm motility.

Drugs
Several drugs affect male fertility, including steroids, cytotoxic drugs used in cancer treatments, and opiates. Contact your local fertility specialist if you are on any long-term medication that you are worried about may affect your fertility. Doctors should always inform you of any side effects, but it is still easy to check if you have forgotten.

Caffeine
The published evidence suggests that caffeine intake, possibly through sperm DNA damage, may negatively affect male reproductive function. Evidence from epidemiological studies on semen parameters and male fertility is, however, inconsistent and inconclusive.

Environmental toxins
There is quite a lot of conflicting evidence about ecological substances that may cause damage to sperm. It is known that radioactivity causes harm and congenital disabilities. Other elements thought to have a deleterious effect on sperm are some perfumes containing phthalates, some types of pesticides, organic mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, and estrogens in the water supply. Many of these elements are still the subject of ongoing research.

Heat
Heat in extreme amounts can damage the testes and decline semen quality. A recent study by Fertility and Sterility found that the heat created from laptops can affect sperm motility and cause DNA damage. So keep your laptops off your laps, gentlemen.

Obesity
Overweight and obese men have worse sperm quality compared to men who are at a healthy weight. Being underweight can also reduce a man's sperm quality and therefore, his fertility. Being overweight or obese can cause hormonal changes that reduce productivity and make men less interested in sex.
