Reasons for Massive Fish Deaths in Kuwait Bay and Persian Gulf
1. NATURAL CAUSES:-
The Kuwait gulf is semi enclosed in nature and there are weather conditions which are extreme in nature with lots of causal effects. The annual rainfall is extremely low and almost nil freshwater addition from rivers and other sources. This leads to a salt concentration in the bay which is almost 44 % higher than average concentration. The temperature conditions are also extreme with water temperature rising up to 32 * Celsius all these factors put immense pressure on the ecological balance of the bay.
2. HUMAN ACTIVITES :-
Other than natural causes there are lot of human related reasons which causes pollution in the bay. Firstly and fore mostly the petrochemical pollution because of the oil exploration and production in bay area and costal region leads to huge amount of seepage in water. The gulf war itself raised the water pollution to a never before high with 6–12 million barrels of oil was added in bay water.
3. OTHER RELATED ISSUES
There was one more issue which contribute to the factor that is sewage from the Kuwait city itself and nearby other cities. This adds a large amount of pollutants in the area. Other contributors are industrial discharge from power plants ‘desalination plants and other industries which are associated closely to the coastal area. All these industries make their discharge to freely flow and dumped into the bay water which is already high on salinity and other pollutants adding more complexity to the problem.
4. ADDITION OF THIRD RIVER
To more add to the factors Iraq built a drainage channel to the bay after the gulf war which was so big in size that it was commonly known as Third River. This also lead to a huge chemical imbalance in Kuwait bay and shifted the source of nutrients all together. The long term effect of Third River was given a new name called ROPME.
5. CLIMATE CHANGES
Irregular temperature changes’ global warming causing extremities in weather conditions and environmental pollution also lead to a misbalance in ecological balance and lead to a uncontrolled growth of harm full algae (single celled organism similar to bacteria.) which was a dino flagellate and red in colour known as Gymnodium sp. this phenomena was so wide spread and that it was referred as the red tide. This was a previously un described species and named after is saddle shaped hypothecal notch as “selliformis”.
