Domestic Tourism and International Tourism in UK

Travel and tourism industry is one of the corner stone of economies of various countries. Tourism can be defined a travel which is taken for certain recreational, professional or casual purpose to a different destination. Tourism today has become a popular leisure activity at a global level. Tourism has been broadly classified as international tourism and domestic tourism. Both types are important in their own ways for the development of the economy and society as whole. Importance of tourism can be understood by the fact that in 2011 tourism sector generated a revenue of more than $ 1 trillion on global level. Countries such as China and other developing nations are playing a major role in development of tourism through a sustained demand throughout the year. Among all the global destination United Kingdom is one of the major tourism destination today which is extremely popular among international visitors.

This task is focused on analysis of UK as a tourism destination and what are the various source of income generators in terms of visitor numbers and income generation. This task will also analyse various statistics related to various emerging trend with the UK as a tourism destination. Ultimately by the end of this task a decision maker of a tourism organisation should be in position to identify major challenges faced by the tourist destination and how further improvement can be made to enable growth of the destination.

Like any other popular tourist destination, UK tourism can also be segregated in two types, i.e. Domestic tourism and International tourism. International tourism is mainly focused on analysis of trends related to foreigner visitors visiting UK or UK citizens travelling abroad for their holiday etc. On other hand domestic tourism is mostly the day or overnight trips made by UK citizens within UK itself. In fact day trips are an important component of the domestic tourism in UK, this can be understood by the fact that in 2005, day trips were responsible for generating more than half of the total domestic tourism expenditure. Post 2008’s economic recession, tourism has become is one of the fastest growing sector in UK especially in terms of job creation.
