Methionine is the first limiting amino acid
Methionine is the first limiting amino acid (AA) in poultry, fish and high yielding dairy cows and the second or third limiting AA for swine. This makes methionine globally one of the most important essential AA for livestock production.
Methionine feed grade exists commercially in the form of DL-methionine which is 50% L-methionine and 50% D-methionine. Recently, isolated L-methionine, made in a combined chemical and fermentation process was claimed to achieve higher performance than DL-methionine in terms of relative bioavailability and environmental sustainability.
Dr. Götz Lauschke, Product Manager Methionine, shares Evonik’s view on the relative bioavailability of methionine isomers and their actual and potential commercial impact in the following interview with Feedinfo News Service.
Amino Acid DL-Methionine is often used in the feed industry to meet the protein demand of target animals and fish , in order to maximize production performance and reduce nitrogen emission. Usually, diets for piglets and growing pigs can show a considerable deficiency in Methionine, especially when formulated to achieve low nitrogen excretion for ecological reasons. Such a deficiency must be conveniently compensated for by adding Health Food DL Methionine in animal protein.
