Men Beware! A Harmless Sore Can Be More Dangerous Than You Think!

by STD Express Clinic Doctor
A harmless sore, if left untreated and ignored, can lead to death. This is syphilis – one of the most dangerous sexually transmitted diseases, albeit curable. The only condition for cure is: you mustn’t ignore that sore.

According to CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), the year 2015 alone saw about 24,000 cases of syphilis in the US. Now, in 2020, with the Coronavirus pandemic, people were locked down in homes and the testing for STD took a backseat. Testing for Covid-19 became the priority.

So, it won’t be surprising if cases of syphilis and other STDs jump up in 2020 and beyond.

The growing cases of syphilis and the tendency to ignore seemingly harmless symptoms like sores pose a threat to people, especially the gay community, according to health officials.

Signs

Signs of syphilis in men, as per VA STD clinic, are deceptive.

Doctors observe that syphilis is more prevalent among bisexual and gay men. In about 83 per cent of cases in men, doctors found that the source of bacterial infection was intercourse with other men.

How the syphilis infection starts

According to doctors, syphilis infection usually starts with a sore that seems, well, just a harmless sore. It could surface on the genitals, the mouth, or rectum. If you continue to have sexual contact, the infection spreads.

“What actually happens is people fail to notice the sore. It could be invisible in the rectum. Even if they notice, it seems so harmless and painless that people ignore it,” says a doctor at the urgent care STD testing center.

“People generally mistake the sore to be a result of some ingrown hair or a usual bump,” the doctor adds.

To add to the deception is the fact that the sore heals in a few days on its own!

You seem fine and healthy. Thereafter, you hardly get a symptom.

That’s the reason doctors caution sexually active people against any bump, sore, or breakout at the genital area, mouth, and rectum. Contrary to the popular belief that STDs spread only through vaginal sex, oral and anal sex are equally responsible for spread of diseases.

“You must ignore anything wrong happening in and around your mouth or rectum, in case you indulge in oral and/or anal sex,” cautions the doctor from the clinic.

Health studies state that men who carry syphilis infection may stay asymptomatic for years. They can easily spread the infection to their partners during this time.

The deadly sore

According to reports by the CDC, genital sores that happen due to syphilis infection make a person more vulnerable to HIV.

“HIV needs a crack or break in the skin to enter and a sore or breakout conveniently provides the gateway to your body,” remarks a doctor at a STD clinic in VA.

The last stage

After years of carrying the infection, signs of syphilis in men, according to VA STD clinic, may surface again; this time, deadlier. The infection can spread to your eyes, nerves, brain, heart, liver, blood vessels, bones, and joints and create symptoms accordingly.

It all starts with a sore. So, the next time you have one, get alarmed. Consider STD testing.
