While skiing and snowboarding season is currently upon us, it’s important to review proper mountain etiquette before hitting the slopes. Whether it’s students from private boarding schools or families and friends taking on the winter-frosted mountains this year, it’s crucial to know proper mountain etiquette for both your own safety and others.

Do’s

First and foremost, before hitting the slopes make sure to familiarize yourself with the slopes. This will keep you from getting lost or getting on a run that is too advanced for your skill level. Second, it’s important to always give the skier in front of you the right-of-way. In other words, be aware of what side they are skiing on and don’t cut them off or get too close to them. Lastly, sharing a chairlift with a stranger is not the end of the world, so be prepared to share a lift with others, whether they are students from private boarding schools or other individuals you may not know.

Don’ts

When it comes to the big “don’ts” of mountain etiquette, it’s important to use common sense. For example, don’t stop in the middle of ski runs. This puts you and other skiers in danger of a collision. Second, don’t leave trash on the mountain or drop it from chairlifts — people come to ski in fresh, smooth snow, not trash-filled snow globs. Also, avoid waving your poles around both on and off the lifts. It’s easier than you think to accidentally strike someone near you with those long things.

Respect

When it comes to mountain etiquette, if you’re ever unsure about the proper rules, it always comes back to respect. Respect the mountain, respect the workers, and respect other skiers and snowboarders around you. Be aware that others might be more or less experienced than you and that everyone is at different levels. Lastly, remember to have fun. While people compete in skiing and snowboarding at places like private boarding schools, others do it purely for fun. So be respectful, apply the do’s and don’ts and have fun shredding down that mountain.
