How to Find Your Golf Swing
With the weather warming up, students will be looking for more reasons to get outside and enjoy the warmer temperatures. Golf is an increasingly popular spring and summer outdoor extracurricular activity at boarding high schools.
Whether you’re gearing up for a new season and could use a refresh on technique or you’re a newbie golfer, here are some tips for finding and perfecting your golf swing. First things first, adjust your stance.
Stance and Tempo
Stand with feet hips with apart, knees slightly bent. Wrap both hands around your club and maintain a firm grip without tensing your arms. You want to be relaxed but maintain control over your club throughout your swing.
Next, you’ll want to find your tempo. Golf Smith – an online retailer for golf equipment, apparel and accessories – says, “Tempo can be defined as the elapsed time of your golf swing from the moment you begin your takeaway to the completion of your follow-through.”
Despite what rookie players in boarding high schools or elsewhere usually think, you don’t need to hit the ball with a ton of force or speed for it to go far. In reality, a relaxed grip and strong stance will give your ball distance and help you keep an even tempo.
Golf Digest – an online golf magazine – says a great golf swing maintains a consistent tempo, is smooth and rhythmic. “You can't fight your natural tempo. If someone says your swing has gotten quick, be wary of trying to slow it down. Instead, check your rhythm and make sure you're completing each stage of the swing.”
Follow Through
Finally, when you wind your club up for the swing – follow through on your back swing to ensure accuracy. Golf Smith writes, “Not only do you lose potential power by shortening your swing arc, you're also likely to rush the club down from the top, robbing your swing of both power and accuracy.”
Whether you’re a student at boarding high schools or someone looking to improve their swing, remember to relax, keep a strong stance, even tempo and follow through on your swing.
