Home Schooling Vs. Boarding Schools

by Wasatch Academy Nationally Ranked Boarding School

Public schools have become a frightening place for parents with kids about to enter the system. With the threats of violence and controversial teaching practices and policies, parents today wonder if homeschooling or private boarding schools are better options. But which to choose?

Private boarding schools are a great way for students to interact with others their age while getting an academic advantage for college. Students at these schools are there not because they are forced to but because they applied and were accepted there, thus they want to learn and apply themselves. These type of friends can help students excel as well as give them lifelong friends that can help them throughout life. Homeschooling can suffer from a lack of other student interaction, since the classes take place at home, though many large cities have homeschool clubs where parents and children can meet and socialize as well as swap stories.

Private boarding schools are staffed with highly educated teachers who are given every opportunity to bring out the best in their students under their care. With the low student to teacher ratio, teachers can be more like mentors to their students, helping them understand what they need to excel not only in college but in life. In most states homeschooling only requires that the parent has a high school diploma, though in order for their children to graduate high school the parent is sometimes required to have certain certifications showing that they are qualified to teach their children. This is fine if the parent has the time commitment to get these qualifications as well as teach the child full time, but very few parents are able to afford these costs.

Aside from the cost for parents to obtain qualifications, homeschooling is less costly than most schools. The parents choose where the field trips go, how often they go and already provide food and board to the students. Private boarding schools can be more costly, though the payment also helps fund the school’s special opportunities, such as Olympic-level exercise equipment. The cost is usually broken down into what every dollar is paying for, so a parent knows how much they’re paying for what amenity and why.

Teaching a child at home is one of the best ways to protect children from unfavorable ideas and environments. A family’s belief system may be contradicted by common teachings in public schools, so home teaching may seem like a better alternative. Special private boarding schools exist across the United States, some with ideals that parents can identify and agree with.
