We all must have experienced the sad moments in our lives when one of our favorite electronic device got damaged due to some unforeseen, unavoidable circumstances and found that the standard warranty period offered by the company had lapsed just a few days ago.

Now, you can’t claim the warranty for the device and need to pay the entire cost that would be incurred in its repair work. In order to keep ourselves from such dreadful situations, are the extended warranties that can be bought by some third party companies dealing in the same.

However, there are certain elements regarding the extended warranties that you must be clear about before shelling out your hard earned money to buy one. In this particular post, I have tried to cover some of those essential points which will help you out in buying the most reliable and reasonably priced extended warranties, for example Squaretrade warranties.

1.  Length of Coverage – The length of coverage varies depending upon the type of item – new, refurbished/used, items with delayed shipment, etc. Read out the terms of your warranty which are different for different cases. It also varies with the retailer from which you bought the product. Carefully examine the date when the extended warranty period starts and the day it is supposed to be ending to avoid any confusion later on.

2.  Coverage Amount –
The value up to which your item is covered can also vary with different companies offering extended warranties. It is obvious however that you should be going for the one who covers up to the maximum value paid by you at the time of purchase of an item. And it’s not difficult to find companies offering a decent coverage amount.

Also know that it is commonplace that the warranty lapses in case of product replacement and you need to buy a new warranty for the new product. However in case of repair, your warranty can cover several repairs depending upon your protection plan. One should go for the one that covers repair costs worth the maximum value of the purchased item.

3.  Conditions for ADH (Accidental Damage from Handling) Coverage –
Many companies that offer ADH coverage include protection against drops or spills for new items but don’t generally cover willful damage, loss or gross misuse of the products. Main items covered under ADH are Laptops, MP3 players, Cameras and other portable electronic devices. However, it must be duly noted that this type of cover is generally not there on refurbished items. Some important exclusions are as follows –

•    Items that are sold in partially working or non-working conditions.

•    Beyond the set number of days for refurbished items

•    In case the ADH coverage is not specifically purchased from the concerned company

•    Accessories and parts that are to be replaced by the consumer himself

•    Software issues (might be covered depending upon the warranty scheme)

•    Any fraudulent or misinterpreted claims (for example, Equipment used for           commercial purpose without any prior notice/information to the parent company of the company that offered extended warranty)

•    Items purchased from certain retailers, etc.

4.  Amount of Money Saved – The price for the extended warranties varies considerably amongst the companies offering the same. One should study the market properly and go for one that would give the most affordable warranty offer with maximum ‘length of coverage’ for your items.

5.  Issues Covered –
One should read the terms of the warranty offer carefully and know for sure what all issues would be covered well in advance to avoid any problems later on.

I hope this article will be good guide for my fellow reader friends when they go out to purchase the extended warranty for their electronic devices or any other household items for that matter.
