Explain Some Physiotherapy Treatment for Back Pain?

by Physios NearMe Physiotherapy

The biggest myth amongst back pain sufferers is that they should not exercise and have proper bed rest to alleviate the pain. The opposite is true; eminent physiotherapists say that bed rest can further worsen the situation as the muscles and tissues become rigid and immobilized.  So in order t reduce back one must adopt an active routine that helps to mobilize the muscles without overstressing them and helps in pain reduction. Physiotherapy is one such branch of science that helps to build the core and strengthens the back.

So what are the exercises that help to treat and alleviate back pain?

Ø  Stretching: It is a single most exercise that can help you get back on feet and make back pain a historical event. Stretching especially nerves stretches help to reduce rigidity and immobilized muscles increases blood circulation and strengthen the muscles. It activates the otherwise clogged nerves and strengthens the deep tissues that support the muscles. Angry Cat stretch, Lumbar stretches, Child’s Pose and Knee to chest pose are some examples of stretching exercise that helps to reduce back pain.

Ø  Ice and hot water therapy: If you are opting for physiotherapy treatments for Back Pain then make sure you don’t overdo it. Initially, when the pain is excruciating and taking sides is also herculean tasks opt for alternative Ice and hot water therapy as it helps to restrict the blood flow and reduce pain. With this, you can also opt for hydrotherapy i.e. sitting in warm water tub to relax the nerves and muscles of the back.

Ø  Core Strengthening poses: As most of the body weight is on the back, it tends to ache or get rigid leading to cramps or spasms. But if the core i.e. abdomen, lower back, and thighs are strong then it will give some relief to the back. Strengthen your core muscles with abdominal exercises like crunches, leg raises, sit-ups and hyperextensions. These help to tone the abdominal muscles and make them support which in turn helps to carry the weight of the body, improve gait and balance leading to less pain.

Ø  Electrical Stimulation combined with Stretching: In order to get faster results, one can also opt for controlled currents i.e. electrical stimulation of the affected area after a heated stretching session. This helps to activate the muscles but also relaxes the tensed muscles, hence acting as pain relief. People with sedentary lifestyle seldom suffer from tensed back that can be resolved with electrical stimulations which are relaxing yet invigorating.

Ø  Active Hydrotherapy: Water therapy is generally considered passive like relaxing in a warm tub but on the contrary active hydrotherapy has a multitude of benefits. Workout in water controls the movement but increases the pressure so more energy is required to workout. Therefore even if the patient does active physiotherapy for 30 minutes he will get the benefit leading to strengthening the back muscles, erecting the spine and of course pain reduction.

To conclude, there can be many reasons for back pain and it can subside for a week or even a month but if it lingers for more than a month then better seek medical advice. If you are opting for physiotherapy then be prepared for a lifestyle change as the sessions will take time and proper diet is also important.
