Cabinet Hardware: Handle Them Well!

While it may seem a rather simple task, trust me when I say that choosing the correct set of handles and knobs for your cabinets is probably one of the biggest interior design challenges you will face. And there are not too many guides or manuals either. The small decisions are the ones that often take the longest amount of time.

For one, if you are keen on reflecting your personal style through your home, how much of an impact can the knob or handle really make? But then again, is your style contemporary or traditional. At the very least, this is an initial step in deciding the kind of knobs you should settle for. Typically, contemporary and modern designs are sleek, rectangular and possibly smooth edged. Traditional designs often are more round, or even triangular, and include carvings or intricate artwork. The traditional knobs and handles are more suited to European kitchens.

The next thing you need to evaluate is size. Of course, this depends largely on the size of the cabinet itself. However, you may take liberties with disproportionately larger or smaller sized knobs to get an unconventional look, if it suits your style.

Your colour choices become very important while selecting cabinet handles or cabinet knobs. Many designers choose to match their cabinet colour with the knobs. But you must take a shot at contrasting colours. Try antique finish knobs on white kitchen cabinets to add a dash of spice to proceedings. Or you may go for blacks or whites for wooden cabinets. Use of colours is where you have the chance to give your cabinets and overall environment a touch of fun and excitement. I strongly suggest that you experiment with colours.

You also have a wide variety of material and finish options to choose from. Metalling cabinet knobs and cabinet handles are seen most frequently, mainly because of their sturdiness and durability. Metal cabinet hardware comes in a variety of finishes like Polished Brass, Satin Nickel, Antique finish etc.  The choice of your finish would depend on the color of the cabinet and the kind of overall contrast or synergy that you wish to achieve for your cabinet furniture.
