Air Liquide Build Demonstration Plant to Recycle CO2 Into Bioethanol

by Rudy P. SysAdmin at howtofindthemoney
Air Liquide has partnered with ArcelorMittal in an industrial-scale demonstration plant to capture carbon gas from the steelmaking process and recycle it into advanced bioethanol.

As part of the project, Air Liquide Engineering & Construction will provide a technology solution that purifies the offgas from the blast furnace used in the manufacture of steel. These gases will then be injected into a bioreactor to produce bioethanol, a second-generation biofuel.

The project aims to demonstrate the use of sustainable solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the steel industry.

Led by steel company ArcelorMittal, together with partner Lanzatech, the project is supported by EU Horizon 2020, the European Union’s research and innovation programme. Construction of the industrial-scale demonstration plant, which will be located at ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Ghent, Belgium, is currently ongoing onsite, and should be operational by the end of 2020.

When complete, the demonstration plant is expected to produce 80 million litres of bioethanol per year.

”This new partnership with ArcelorMittal demonstrates our shared commitment to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said François Venet, senior vice-president of strategy at Air Liquide. “This is also a clear illustration of the initiatives Air Liquide has committed to as part of its Climate Objectives. We strive to push the boundaries of innovation to lower the carbon footprint of the industry and develop technology solutions for our customers to contribute to the energy transition.”
