After reporting to the workplace, a certified nurse assistant should make her ready in nursing dresses and then start visiting her patients. She is supposed to take all relevant record of temperature, blood pressure, heart beat, and other symptoms of the patients under her care in the standard chart and immediately report back the same to the nurse.

Bringing breakfast as well foods for the patients and supporting them in taking their foods are important and imperative for her. During the visit of the doctor, in round while the nurse reports, the CNA should assist beside her.

The patients are to take bath under the monitoring of CNA. It is also her duty to be care and record the amount of foods intake of the patients and if any problem found that should be reported to the nurse. 

For the entire day CNA should monitor and take care of her patients and ensure their well being. If the condition of any patient gets deteriorated, she should take immediate action with the help of nurse, in duty. Other duties of the day include repositioning of bed ridden patient’s, negligence of which may affect dangerous bedsores.

Apart from this, clearing and rearranging of catheter and helping the incapable patients with bedpans are also under the CNA duties. Moving the patients to operation theatre and arranging set of necessary surgical equipment is also the duty of certified nurse.

Laboratory related duties
Out of the important duties, the certified nurse assistant is required to assist the nurse, said as RN to look after overall patient care. Collection of specimens like blood, urine, stood or sputum, marking them properly and sending to laboratory for necessary examination is under her daily duties. Arranging saline bottle or changing it or oxygen is   also important depending upon the necessity.

Maintaining cleanliness
One of the most important daily tasks of the CNA is maintaining cleanliness and housekeeping. She is required to keep the patient rooms tidy and clean. Changing of bed sheet as well pillow cover and making the place in order is her job. This ensures proper hygiene is maintained, on the other hand it also make the patient feel refreshed and comfortable.

Patient special care
Some of the patients may require sponge baths, dressing as well undressing which should be cared by CNA. The patients to be operated need special care and preparation for by shaving as well as dressing. Helping the patients to in their exercise is also important for the CNA.

Hygienic Techniques
An important daily practice of the certified nurse assistants is to take sterilized measures at the time of handling the sick and ill patients. It is most important so that germs do not spread in between the patients. Globes are to be used at the time of handling patients. She is required to keep her hands washed. All items used for patient care should be kept sterilized. Wearing of gloves lessens the chance of infectivity and negligence of which may cause severe affect on the patients. Wearing gowns and masks in addition gloves is highly important when dealing with infectious patients.

A CNA is responsible to look after around 20 patients for her entire duty hours a day. She is the main caregiver as well vigilant of the patients, under her care. If you are interested then you can take CNA training.
